The winner turned up in F. Mannix Ogden gelding, Superintendent. August Belmonts Stromboli and HaPcnny ruled favorite m Hit; betting, but after showing the way to the last ! furlong, Srromboli, the reliance of tiie stable, was displaced bv Superintendent. In the last sixteenth 1 Silent Pilot, Mrs. L. A. Livingstons representative, i closed with a rush and beat Stromboli for second : motiev. Superintendents performance was a lis- tinctly good one. lie followed the fast pace set by UlrtinlHiii and, when the latter tired, be assumed the j lead. When challenged by Silent Pilot he had enough left to withstand the latters bid. The race was worth ,950 to the winner. Holsert Oliver . elosed much ground from a poor beginning and ran . perhaps the best race of those behind the placed : noises. Die Chesapeake Handicap, for three-year-olds, was contested by a good tield. Cant. E. 15. Cas-Kitts crack lilly, Flying Fairy, again demonstrated , her class when she took up top weight of Pi! pounds and, making all the pace, won comfortably. Ringling made a game effort to catch the winner, but was unequal to the task. The early running of the race was marred by an accident to jockey Me-Cahey, who was astride Star laze, .lust after the Held passed tin; stand. Star Gaze stumbled and Mc-Cahey fell off. He escaped with a shaking up and was unable to ride until the last raea. There were big tields in two of the races, the first being made up of sixteen maiden two-year-olds. It was a scramble from the start and Charlestonian proved best. The closest finish of the afternoon came with he running--of the "Second, -which had only live "tarters. Water Welles was a strong choice and shUilil have won. llurllngame rode a weal: finish and Gold Cap got the verdict in the last nod. An owners handicap steeplechase provided the daily jumping race. This was another interesting race and, though 0 Bear won, he probably was not the best. Shannon River lost his rider early in the race, but went on riderless with his company. He kept to the course for the entire journey and interfered badlv with L. Navarre and Maltbie. O Bear managed to escape Interference and this enabled him i to win. , , I. .!.
