Pons , John Furlong qualified handsomely this afternoon a lor the Latonia Cup race at two arid one-quarter . miles, to be run next Saturday, when he won the mile and three-eighths handicap, that featured this afternoons card at Latonia. This handicap served -as a preliminary to the big race which will be de- . cided on the closing day of the Latonia meeting. Clubs, winner of the Louisville Cnp, two miles, at j Douglas Park, finished second and Just Red proved Lest of the others. ... - It was Clubs first appearance since his success ; in the Douglas Park race, but his good trials here and his known ability as a stayer combined to make ; him the favorite. He flattered his supporters by ; showing the way to the last furlong, where John Furlong challenged in resolute style and, after a sharp drive, won out by half a length. Just Red was beaten off. The time of the race, 2:19, is one-tirth of a second faster thau the former track record for this distance made by Mamie Algol July 4, 1910. John Furlong and Clubs were both worked out an additional quarter mile in preparation for their engagement of next Saturday. On his showing of today it is likely that John Furlong will rule favorite for the big race. Fine, sunshiny weather, which prevailed here today, contributed to an attendance that was almost of holidav proportions. The crowd enjoyed the sport and" showed their appreciation by prolonged cheering for the winners. Most of the finishes were close and exciting. The two-year-old race at six furlongs, in whicli some of the better class of youngsters ran, was captured by Gracilla, from the T: C. McDowell establishment. It was the first purse for the McDowell stable here. David Craig and Belloc fought it out for second and third place. Waterbass, tiie favorite, ran in listless fashion, and it is possible that his recent efforts over muddy tracks has dulled his speed. The "Iron horse," L. H. Adair,-wound up the afternoons proceedings witli a sensational victory over High Private, which he leat in the last stride of a terrific drive, Milton B. taking third. He was entered for ,200, but escaped a run-up on account of the tardiness of the person Intending to bid on him. The advance bid was made, according to 1 Judge .Shelley, uftex. he had -pronounced him .sold. . Sit his owner. " 7 . , John D. Wakefield scored his fifth victory in the second race. He was entered for .00 and escaped 1 b.ing b.d oil. J. B Respess uncovered a possible good one in Scarlet" Oaks in the opener. Mr. Respess was also represented in the race by Christinas Eve. Wakefield had won for the favorite backers, no further choices scored. . . After the finish of the closing dash. Mrs. M. R. . Farmer, represented in the race by Lawsuit, claimed Sonada for ,040. He was In for ,000. Jockev McCabe was suspended today for the rest h of the "meeting by starter Cassidy for disobedience ; at the post in the fifth race. The two-horse combination, consisting of John D. : Wakefield and Beulah S., yielded .1913.sh0.50. The ; three-horse combination went to the field backers, ; who each received 0.03 as a result of L If. i i Adairs success over High Private.
