RUSSIAN IS HEAVIEST NEWMARKET BUYER. London, Eng., December 10. The prices obtained at the bloodstock sales at Newmarket last week show that there is a great boom in racing throughout the world. There was an almost unlimited demand for high-class horses. The chief buyer was a young Russian, M. Manatschcff, who is described as one of the wealthiest men in the world. He owns vast oil lands in the Caucusus and lias arranged to establish a great breeding stud near Paris and another in Russia. Among his purchases last week were two five-year-old mares at 5.000 and 3,500 guineas i,500 and 8,375, respectively, and a four-year-old at 3,000 guineas 5,750. The Duke of Devonshire, who has given np racing, sold ten broodmares, of which M. Manatschcff bought four at 4.000, 2.700, 2.S00 and 1,400 guineas 4,-250, 4,475, 5,100 and ,750, respectively. A tillv foal by Spearmint was purchased by him for 2,100 guineas 1,125, and a colt foal by Bay-ardo for 3,100 guineas 0,375. besides a number of other foals at an average of 1.000 guineas ,250. It is said that his ambition is to possess an unrivaled breeding stud.
