ENGLANDS CHIEF THOROUGHBRED SALE. From a modest beginning the December Sales of thoroughbreds held annually hi- Messrs. Tattcrsall at Newmarket, Kng.. have advanced in magnitude and restdts so that they now surpass all such sales taking place anywhere. Last, years sale was a record breaker as compared with previous years, but this years sale was greater still in number of horses sold tind average of prices. The principal buyer this j ear was the Itusslan petroleum magnate, M. MautaschelT, whose purchases amounted to not far from !?::00,KX. Among other things, he gave the record price of :i,100 guineas, or 5.120, for the celt foal by Bayardo Cheshire Cat. The best previous record for a foal at auction was 2.000 guineas.
