LONG SHOTS TAKE PURSES FAVORITES AND OUTSIDERS EQUALLY DIVIDE CARD AT PALMETTO PARK. L. H. Adair, at 30 to 1, Takes Measure of "Winning: Witch, Choice of Feature Race Loan Shark, Lost Fortune and Linbrook Winning: Favorites. Charleston, S. C, December 10. The strenuously campaigned L. II. Adair, quoted at 30 to 1 in the betting, accounted for the feature race at Palmetto Park this afternoon. The race was at three-quarters-and engaged some good sprinters. Winning Witch, the 3 to 5 favorite, finished second and Celesta was third. L. II. Adairs success was entirely unexpected. In previous starts, when ridden by E. Martin, it had been the custom to keep him out of forward contention until the last quarter, where he would: be called on. Sometimes he would close a big gap to win, but more often he would fall. In todays race he was handled by Buxton and his instructions were to keep behind the leaders until the stretch was reached. But Buxton is essentially a front rider and, disregarding instructions, kept his mount going from barrier rise to finish, with the result that he easily disposed of Celesta, the early pacemaker, and had enough speed in reserve at the end to withstand the bid of Winning Witch. He won by a neck. Winning Witch was probably liest, but she tried to bore out on the turns. Star Actress ran far below the form she displayed In two preceding efforts and made a disappointing showing. The stewards interrogated some of the riders, owners and trainers, and adduced sufficient information to satisfy them that the reversals were due to natural racing causes. Lost Fortune proved much the best in the fifth race and won as jockey Turner pleased from Behest and Stellata. After the finish he was bid up from au entered price of 00 to and bought in. Another run-up developed in the closing dash, in which Linbrook, the favorite, beat Earl or Savoy. J. W. Iledrick, owner of the latter, advanced the winner from .500 to 00 and bought him. The stewards this afternoon handed down a ruling snsnendiiih2Ckey V. Rlghtinire for ten days for fW!gttTOTlgTryesterdays fourth race, in which Carlton G. suffered most and unseated jockey J. Henry. Carlton J. came out of the race in such bad condition that it is doubtful if he will be able to start again for a considerable time. After Corey had won on Amcrlcus he was taken sick and the remainder of his riding engagements were cancelled. The Weber and Ward establishment suffered a severe loss tills morning in the death of the good racer Gay Bird. Trainer J. S. Ward, who is half owner in the stable, has been extremely unfortunate since his advent here. His troubles began before the racing started, When he suffered a loss of 00 by having his pocket picked. Then his automobile was smashed when it was run into by a reckless driver. Both winners lie has saddled at the meeting were run up for goodly sums. Next followed the suspension of his rider, Keogh, and the culmination of the bad luck came today in the death of Gay Bird. O. A. Bianchl announced today that he had severed his connection with the James MacManus establishment and that the latter would in future superintend the training of his own horses. It is also the intention of Mr. MacManus, according to report, to make Louisville his permanent home and most of the racing he Intends doing in future will be confined to the Kentucky tracks. L. Bluuie: will succeed J. Edwards as the trainer of the J. W. Hedrick horses here. J. W. May sold the colt Billy Stuart at private terms to T. J. Brown today.
