SWEEP SPECULATION IN AUSTRALIA. There is no doubt as to a dabble in sweep tickets appealing to thousands who rarely attempt to back a winner, and this fact enabled "Tattersalls t till one 10 .shilling sweep and six at 5 shillings on tin; Melbourne Cup. the tickets in each totalling 100.010. The amount invested was 81.000,000 and of tlie 5 shilling sweeps three came to this state, two went to Queensland and one to Western Austin Ha. while the 10 shillings sweep is credited to ie toria, the drawer residing in Mellxiurne. However, subsequent to the Cm., I heard that, though the ticket was purchased by a Melbourne man. it was actuallv on behalf or a friend in England. II so. the Melbournite who sent for the ticket has good cause to lament his bad luck. Among the winners. "See War and Company. Valley, F.risbauc, is suggestive of a Chinese syndicate, and I fancy I m" hear tin? individual who has patronized these sweeps for vears without even drawing "a liver delivering himself on the subject of the "luck of tlie heathen." The drawing of 5,000 or more must be a pleasant experience, but I know of more, than one individual whom it did not benefit. They were fairlv carried "off their feet," and started to live as if tlie amount mentioned were merely an annual income. The Tasnianian government derivtv; a useful revenue from the sweep business and I fancv some of those states which directed "Tattersalls" to "move on" must occasionally feel a little envious. Pilot, in Sydney Pnferee.
