r THE PRESENT STAR OF TEXAS-BRED THOROUGHBREDS AS A SPRINTER : Although under disabilities so far as racing in their own state is concerned, Texas breeders hold on persistently and quite a number of stud farni3 devoted to the thoroughbred are maintained, with a good annual output of horses quite able to hold their own in respectable company. With the Hanover stallion, Abe Frank, at Its head, the Newman stud farm lias produced some excellent racers and in tlie Hying lilly, Man Zaretu, one that Iwrders on being a celebrity. She is gifted witli an extraordinary measure of speed nd, so far as covering sprinting distances is concerned, she holds every horse at Juarez safe except Iron Mask. Altogether she is a credit to Texas breeding and her racing record is quite beyond the ordinary. Mitt it is a record of sprinting exclusively. Whether she can stay a mile or more is a problem that has never been put to the test. When a two-year-old she won thirteen races in nineteen starts and was only once unplaced. This was n the occasion of her debut in racing at Juarez, January 7, 1912, in a dasli of three-eighths of a mile, which Hawthorn won, with Palatable second and her stablemate, Pat Gannon, third. Her next race was at the same distance and in this she ran a close second to Velio Forty, with Tildy Wolff arth third. Then s-he won three times in succession. January 12 she won the S-iioritas Stakes, at three and a half furlongs, "villi Truly second and Velio Forty third, in 40-,. February H she ran a dead heat witli Stout Heart at a half mile in 4S, carrying 117 pounds to his 105 and, the purse being divided, both ranked its winners under racing law. She had previously beaten Palatable, Oldsmobile and six more at three and a half furlongs in Kih. so this was her first essay over a half mile. March 2 she ran third to Inquieta and Negligee at a half in 47"-. and probably was short that day. This completed her Juarez spring campaign and she was taken north. At Coeitr dAIene. May 14, she easily defeated Velie Forty, Jessie Porter and four more at a half mile in 49. June 19, at the same track, she wen from Camia, Vested Rights and four others, at live-eighths of a mile in 1 :01 --, but had some dilliculty in outstaying Camia by three-quarters of a length. At Lagoon, July -I, she won af. a half mile in 19 from John llurie and three more, one of which was the favor-he. Floral Park, and which wheeled at the start and was left at the post. This pair came together again live days later at four and :i half furlongs and Floral Park won by four lengths in 52f,. which is the record :il the distance to this day, but had also been previously made by Joe Morris. Ian Zareta was a game see- -ml ami carried 109 pounds to 107 on Floral Park. Orlin Kripp was third in this fast-run race and fnur vi-tc unplaced. Good and fast as Pan Zareta was when a two-year-old. Floral Park was better and faster. July 2.! Pan Zareta won at live-eighths of a mile in 1:00 from Auto Run, Melis and live more. That was l:er last race at Lagoon. At Miilte, August 9. she beat Envy. Al Bloch, Mother Katcham and Truly at a half mile in 47. but she was beaten a half length by Orlin Kripp in a live-eighths dash August 17. The in.ck was slow, despite which the race was run in 1:01, Envy finishing third. At the same distance on a a.-t track live days .a tor she won in 1:00 from Coeur dAIene. John Hurie and four others. Then she was taken back lo Juarez and in December won her remaining three starts of the year, the best of the three being a dash of live and a half furlongs, in which she defeated the older ht.rses. Lady Panchita, Pawhuska, Kootenay and Cracker Mox in 1:07. She carried 95 ponnds to 100 on Lady Panchita and only won from the latter by it head. The good lilly began her career as a three-year-olds at Juarez in January and before it was brought to a close at the same track had travelled far with varying results. At the weights this was a capital race. The Juarez track was nothing like as fast as it is now. This race concluded her quite suc-cessfit", Juarez campaign and she was taken to Kentucky to face a succession of defeats before victory should again attend her Hying footsteps. In till she started in six races at Louisville and Latonia and won lion:-, a second and a third being the best she coud do. There is no doubt that her journey north had upset her and she was slow about regaining her true form. From Latonia she was taken to Canada and there, beginning at Windsor. July IS, ran six more races before scoring a win. Her lirst Canadian victory was at Fort Erie. August 11. when she defeated Joe Knight, Duqucsiie and three others over a heavy track at three-quarters in 1:17. Then she emphasized her return to winning form by taking live of her next six races. The first of these she took by a disqualification. It was at Windsor, August if, in a three-quarters dash, in which, at the end of a long drive. Great Mriiain was in front of her by a neck in r:l27f., but bad f plainly fouled her that he was promptly set back and tlie race awarded to her. Grosvenor linished third. Great Mritain carried 107 pounds to her 100 and was a ! to 20 favorite. Three days later, over a heavy track. Flabbergast beat bet-in tlie St. Clair Handicap, the favorite. Then she was taken to Louisville and hud the bad luck to make her tirst start in tlie race in which Leochares wou at three-quarters from Helios and Iron Mask in 1:10A and was unplaced. That was enough of Louisville for her and she was taken to Dallas as a Texas State Fair attraction. There Mie won a race and lost one and journeyed back to her old stamping ground at Juarez.
