JUAREZ CONDITIONS CHANGE SNOWFALL IN NIGHT LEAVES MEXICAN COURSE IN MUDDY CONDITION. Card Riddled by Scratches and Substitution of New Race for Two-Year-Old Dash Rendered Necessary Just Red Wins Handicap, El Paso, Tex., February 24. Tlie lirst snow of. the season fell during the night and, although it, disappeared rapidly under the influence of the suns rays today, the Juarez track w:is left iu a muddy a:nl sticky condition for Ihe racing or this afternoon. As a result the card was greatly depleted by scratches. The race for two-year-olds, which had been originally carded to open the days sport, suf fered to such an extent that it became necessary to declare it off and in its stead a selling race at live-eighths of a mile for three-year-olds and over was substituted. Lemon Joe, quoted In the betting at eight to one, was returned the winner of this race in a hard drive with Velie Forty. .1. Nolan, particularly well served by the changed condition of the going, was installed favorite for the second race and won by as far as jockey Neylou pleased. Kid Nelson heat the others in this race just as easily. Ave, winner or Ilie third race, was another that seemed to fairly revel iu the going, sne ted a wide margin throughout: and at the finish wa eight lengths in advance of Sadie Shapiro, the second horse. Although practically left at the post as a result of a poor start. Just Red, tlie odds-ou favorite, found it easy to win the handicap at seven-eighths of a mile that served as the days chief racing feature. Vested Rights beat the gate and threatened to make a runaway race of it, but finally tired and Just Red dashed past him in the stretch and went on to victory by himself. The fifth race resulted in the only close linish of the afternoon, when Quid Nunc, quoted at odds-on, had all he could do to beat Burnt Candle, which had been backed as a "good thing." Tlie other con-testnunts In this race were badly beaten off. The closing race was easily won by Calcium, one of the betting choices. Moncaster, the receding fa-, vorite, linished second. Kay Spence this morning received an offer of ,000 for Hodge, one of the prominent candidates for this years Kentucky Derby. Spence declined the offer and declared that in spit of the two recent defeats of Hodge his horse is not for sale. Trainer Mosc Goldblatt announced today that he would ship Ilyki. J. Nolan and several others of the Jefferson Livingston string to Tulsa, Okla., at the conclusion of the Juarez meetiug. Following the Tulsa meeting, which opens April 11 and continues for thirty days, the horses will be shipped to Oklahoma City. The other horses in the stable will go to Kentucky. J. K. Hughes retired from the ranks of the layers today and Col. W. K. Applegato took his stand in the ring. -rockey Feeney was suspended for ten days by starter Cassidy for disoliedience at the barrier in the first race. Phil Cliinn will remain here till about March C, when he will leave for Lexington with his wife and daughter. After transacting some business there he will sail from New York April 1 for France. There he will meet gentlemen interested in tho turf, with a view of taking a position as trainer. He has not yet decided to accept an offer made him, but will go abroad for the purpose of looking over turf affairs in France before he decides to sign a contract.
