" f ! . ; j ANOTHER DAY OF IDLENESS ADVERSE CONDITIONS PREVENT RESUMPTION OF RACING AT PALMETTO PARK. Sleet Storm Follows Snow Storm and Card Is Declared Off for Second Day in Succession New Card Prepared for Today. Charleston. S. C, February 2G. Yesterdays snow storm in this locality was followed by a sleet storm of such severity that it became necessary to declare off the Palmetto Park races, for the second day in succession. The city and its environs were literally enshrouded in ice this morning. Trees were so heavily laden down with their unaccustomed burden that they offered a serious impediment to travel and the street car service of the city became paralyzed. Old timers characterized the storm as the most severe that Charleston has ever had. The sun made its reapivearance this morning and the management, of Palmetto Park is hopeful tint the track will be in condition to race over by tomorrow. It was covered with snow and ice this morning and would have been dangerous to race over. Todays card was declared off and a new card was prepared for tomorrow. it is now certain that the Palmetto Derby, scheduled to be decided on Saturday, will he run over a soft, track. Under the influence of a brilliant sun the course thawed steadily this afternoon. A large force of workmen was put on the course this afternoon removing particles of ire and tilling in blind holes. The going will be heavy for tomorrow. As a result of the adverse track conditions training operations have been practically suspended for thw last two days. Czar Michael and Charlestonian. lioth intended as starters in the Derby to be run next Saturday, were given light exercise over the course. Czar Michael is said to have come out of his work badly cut about the legs as a result of his trainers failure to protect him with bandages. The injury is not. thought serious enough to prevent him from starting in the Derby. Tiie stable of G. W. J. Hissell will be shipped to Lexington next Saturday.
