THE BEST COLT MARTINET HAS AS YET SENT TO OUR RACING .T. L-. Hollands stallion. Martinet, is a son of the noted English sire, Martagon, which died last month, and, if annually in the couse of the next two or three years he sends more like Gainer to the races, he will deservedly acquire substantial fame for himself. It was noticeable last summer and fall that when handi-oapper Vosburgh was called on to assign weights to the two-year-olds racing over the eastern tracks Gainer was usually given imposts indicating that he was ollicially ranked among the topsawyers of his age. Perhaps his rating in some cases was too high, but he certainly proved himself to be a fast and game colt, quite able to render a good account of himself in any class of company. In England Martagons progeny number many notable stayers and this grandson of his may inherit this desirable quality in a race horse. Last year Gainer was introduced to racing early in the racing season and scored at the first time of .-.sking. This was in a half-mile dash over a muddy track at Charleston, March 27, in which he defeated thas. Cannell, Old Jordan and two more in 50 and was an even money favorite, but only won by a neck from Chas. Cannell. This was his only start at Charleston and lie did not go to the post again until April lit at Havre de Grace. This was in a half-mile dash for which he was the favorite, but ran unplaced to Knver Bey, Uncle Jimmie and Armament in 40, beginning slowly and finishing fast. April 20 he made iimends by winning at four and a half furlongs iu 54, with Trade Mark second, Pomette Bleu third and seven useful youngsters unplaced. This was a good and fast run race and he won by three lengths. Iu tin? Aberdeen Stakes, run over a slow track, April 28. at the same distance, he was again beaten by Knver Bey, liuishing a good second in 55, witlj Executor third. This Knver Bey was at that time quite a sjieedy two-y-ar-old and winner of three races In a row, but trained off subsequently. At Pimlico, May 0, Gainer again ran second at four and a half furlongs, this time to A. Belmonts colt, Flittergold. He carried 117 pounds to Flittergolds 107 and was beaten a nose iu 55, Executor finishing third, witli seven others unplaced. His next start was in the Juvenile Stake, at Belmont Park, June 4. Punch Bowl ran its five-eighths straight in 50, won by six lengths and was a 7 to 10 favorite. Kl Biod was second and Gainer third. At that time racing folks down east thought Punch Bowl capable of coping with Old Rosebud, a notion that was? thoroughly dispelled later on. In fact, the slowly maturing Gainer was much better than Punch Bowl, but not then ready to prove it. June 19 Gainer had his revenge. This was in the Great American Stakes, over the same course and distance. It was Gainers day and, running the distance in 59, he won by two lengths, wilh Mater second and Golden Chimes third. He carried 113 pounds. Punch Bowl carried 125 pounds, was a 4 to 5 favorite and finished sixth. This was an important event and of the net value of .J.1,700. One immediate effect was to penalize the winner for future events and also to gain him the respectful consideration of the handleappcr. This latter phase was exemplified June 20 when he started in a piuse handicap at five and a half furlongs and, being given .118 pounds, ran unplaced to Surprising, Executor and Stake and Cap in 1:05, but had lieen pulled up at the start and practically had no chance. Surprising carried 115 pounds. Kxeculor 108 and Stake and Cap 105. June .10 he started in the Great Trial Slakes, at three-quarters of a mile, and ran third to Punch Bowl, 1 IS, and Mater, 107, in 1:14, beaten a head and a length and a half. This was Punch Bowls last victory and in his subsequent races he was not even once placed." The other starters and their weights were Golden Chimes, 100; Stake and Cap, 100: Spearhead. 100. and Fathom, 105. Gainer had as good a chance to win as anything up to five-eighths, but was not as yet hardened and tired in the last eighth while finishing resolutely. July 5, in the Keene Memorial Stakes, the filly Stake and Cap won her only race of the year when, carrying the featherweight of 97 oounds to his 110, she beat him by a half length in 1:14. Executor, 113 pounds, was third arid the unplaced ones were Punch Bowl, 119; Mater, 102, and Golden Chimes. 10.1. It was a badly ridden race that Gainer should have won. His next essay was more successful. Starting in the Youthful Stakes, July 31, he ran its three-quarters in 1:13 with 112 pounds up and won by four lengths, with Golden Chimes, 10.1, second: AVooden Shoes, 100, third, and Mater, 105; Stake and Cap. 109, and Scrapper, 102. unplaced. Not having much to beat, he was a 7 to 10 favorite. This was his last start at Belmont Park and ho was taken to Saratoga. His first start there took place August 9 in the rich Saratoga Special, at three-quarters of a mile, in which all carried stake weights and twelve started. He was a joint favorite at 3V. to 1 with Early Rose and Imperator. but second was the best he could do, Roamer winning in 1:13 by a length and a half, with Gainer second two length iu front of Black Toney. Punch Bowl, Figinny, Spearhead. Early Rose, King McDowell. Prairie. Golden Chimes, Mr. Sniggs and Imperator were the unplaced ones. In his next race he was called tiKm to meet the splendid Old Rosebud and ran unplaced. This was in the United Hotel Stakes, August 1.1. at three-quarters. The starters and weights were Old Rosebud. 125; Black Broom. 107: Pomette Bleu. Ill: Gainer. 12S: Cliff Field. 110, and King .McDowell. 114. Old Rosebud won in a canter in 1:13, with Black Broom second and Pomette Bleu third. Gainer was a fairly good fourth after having been left at the post. In the Albany Handicap, ran August IS. at the same distance, he carried 122 pounds and ran second to BracFeys Choice. 117 pounds, in 1:13. with Pan-American. 110, third. Punch Bowl. 110: Ha Penny. 110; Pomette. Bleu. 107; Slake and Cap, 113: Dr. Samuel, 112, and Trade Mark, 10S, ran unplaced. Next he ran unplaced to Little Nephew. 125: Black Broom, 110, and Spearhead. 100, in the Adirondack Handicap. He carried 117 pounds and the four horses were in a heap and lapped on at the end. Gainer was away last and, running the best lace of all, would probably have won if off well. His unlucky Saratoga campaign came to an end in a purse race at seven-eighths of a mile, September 1. which Braillevs Choice won in 1:20. with Surprising second and .Ralph third. He was a ioor fourth, with six more behind him. Bradleys Choice carried 124 pounds. Surprising 120 and Ralph 10S to his 120. His next start was iu the Lafayette Handicap, at Havre do Grace. September 10, distance five and a half furlongs. The starters and weights were Gainer. 120; Roamer, 123: Mr. Sniggs, 10S; Northerner, 105: Addie M.. 117: Preston Lynn, 99: Uncle Mun, 108; Canto, 92, and Cutaway, 104. and at the end of a good race Gainer defeated Roamer by a length and a half, with Mr. Sniggs a good third, in 1:00. September 2.1 he was an even money favorite for the Eastern Shore Handicap, although burdened with 120 pounds, but was left at the pot and the race fell to the speedy lilly, Tranid. with Northerner second and Uncle Mun third Septemlter 30, with the same weight up, lie ran unplaced in the Erdenheim Handicap, at three-quarters, Tranid. 10S pounds, winning In 1:12, with Addie M., 100, second, and Pomette Bleu, 101. third. His last race of the year was at Laurel. October 17. and in this, carrying 125 pounds to 117 on Surprising, tie ran a good second to the latter at five and a half furlongs iu 1:00. Addie M.. 100, was third and Yossbun, Valkyrie and Roamer also ran. The record and pedigree of this good young horse are as follows: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp.
