HUNDRED TO ONE SHOT IS WINNER. Uncle Ed Wins Race at Charleston with Long Odds Quoted Republicans Easy Victory. Charleston, S. C, March 4. Horses of ordinary class made up the fields in a majority of the races at Palmetto Park this afternoon, hut interesting contests resulted. In the first race eleven youugsters, the largest juvenile field of the meeting, tried conclusions. A handicap at one mile and a sixteenth was the stellar offering and proved an easy thing for Republican, which won as his rider pleased without being extended. Sleeth took second place from I.o-chiel. The latter was sore while going to the post and gave a poor exhibition, but at that much better than did Carlton G., the second choice, which retired from contention after going half a mile. In the two-year-old race May Shaw was returned the winner and her victory was mostly due to the clear track she enjoyed, while the most seriously considered contenders were suffering from interference. Moscowa was the favorite, hut was almost thrown in the first furlong when the others cut across sharply and later he was forced to go wide in the stretch. Jim Savage was another that was bothered extensively. With a clear course Jim Savage and Moscowa would have had the race between them. Uncle Kd furnished a big surprise in the second race by leading all the way and winning with odds of .100 to 1 against him. Single just failed to head him, and Lady Innocence, the favorite, was third. The mile race that came third on the card resulted in a victory for Bodkin, which beat out the suddenly improved Jim Caffrey and the poorly handled favorite. Rod and Gun. Miss Velraa, well supported, got home in advance in the fifth race. Lord Wells just lasting to beat Spellbound for second place. W. M. Sheedys Dungarven arrived this morning from Norfolk and will Iny trained by Hugh Penny. Bookmaker Abe Levy was an arrival this morning from Florida and will remain for several days. W. Walker has put to jumping the horses Sherlock Holmes and Dynamite. They are showing aptitude and probably will develop into useful fencers. Scarlet Pimpernel and Portarlington. two others in the Walker stable, are both well schooled at fencing and will be sent through the field this summer in Canada. Frank E. Brown is the latest to announce an intention of racing in Kentucky this season and will ship his string to Lexington at the close of the meeting here.
