WILL LEASE DENVER TRACK W. A. READ, OF VANCOUVER, WILL CLOSE OVERLAND PARK DEAL TODAY. Gets Lease on Property with Option of Purchase and Plans for Attractive Meeting Will Shortly Be Announced. Denver, Col., Mifrch 4. With the arrival to-morrow in Denver of W. A. Road, of Vancouver, B. C, lessee of the Overland Park track and holder of permission from the Colorado State Racing Commission to conduct a mixed meeting from Saturday, June 1.1, to Saturday, July 4. there will be things stirring here iu connection with thoroughbred sporr. Mr. Read is coming to close up a two to five years lease, with an option of purchase, on Overland Park, which is owned by Henry Wolcott, and to re ceive the lormal license to race from the commission. These two essential details accomplished, he will get down to the grind of detailed business which precedes the establishment and conduct of every first-class meeting. First, there will be the early closing harness stakes to determine upon and advertise. Mr. Bead, on his last visit, declared that he would put on as many trotting and pacing events as would fill and would offer stakes and purses which will attract horses from California and the northwest to stop over here on their way to the Grand Circuit meetings in the east. Then the amount and character of the running events will he determined upon and announced to the horsemen at ..uarez and Charleston, as well as to owners whose horses are widely scattered at present, lhe handicaps and stakes will be more liberal than have ever been offered in Denver before and will be sufficient inducement to attract a good class of stables. The Wolcott representatives in Denver have had carpenters and other laborers at work at the track for a couple of weeks repairing the damage done to the roofs of the stables by the heavy snow. They plan to turn the track over to Mr. Read in perfect-condition. The lessee himself has further improvement plans and told the commission when last here that he expected to expend about 5,000 in improvements upon buildings, stands and grounds.
