. WHAT FIVE YEARS OF FAR WESTERN RACING YIELDED FOR LADY PANCHITA A good daughter of Ogilcn that has for several years past comported herself worthily in racing, over the far western and southwestern tracks, is the brown mare, Lady Pauchita. Since breaking into racing in 1009 she has been given a strenuous career and shown herself to bo gifted with a wonderfully good constitution from the way she has throve in it. Last year, for the first time in her racing, she won enough money to secure a place in the list of thirty best winners of the year. Most of her racing has been over tracks where values were small and it was not until she was six years old that she had a chance to reap an adequate reward for her many displays of speed. Last year she had a chanco in stake races and it was due to the fact that she won the Dos Itepublicas Stakes at Juarez, Idaho Quickstep Handicap at Coeur dAlene, Itutte Handicap at Butte and tho Iroquois, Exposition and Favonius handicaps at Vancouver that she gained a place in the select list of the thirty chief winners of 1013. It is also to be noted that she won more money last year than in her previous four years of racing combined, apparently improving with age, as did the gelding. Donald Macdonald, of eastern fame. Gifted with line speed, most of her racing has been confined to sprinting distances, but she stays well enough when called on, her victory in the Butte Handicap being at a mile and an eighth. Inspection of her pedigree would seem to indicate that she should be competent to cover any reasonable racing distance when properly trained for the ordeal. Lady Pauchita ran her lirst race at Salt Lake City, Utah, May 22, 1!09, and was an unplaced GO to 1 outsider in a half-mile dash won in 50 by Miunedocia. She ran several races there before winning. Her first success occurred June 22 in another half-mile dash, in which she defeated King of Yolo, Quickly and lour more two-year-olds in 51. She then ran as the property of Matt Foster and was trained by Fred Foster of Dr. Rice and Sulross fame. She has had various other owners since then. In the course of that 3 sirs racing she started in thirty-four races, of which she only won four and evidently was not a precocious two-year-old. She improved and did better as a three-year-old. Her first race at that age came off on the first day ou which she could claim it. taking place at Juarez, January 1, 1010. Better still, it was a victory, she defeating Dave Montgomery, Delf atid live more at three-quarters of a mile in 1:14. Then, alter running third to Charlie Hargrave and Rustem in 1:12 and second to Charlie Hargravc in 1:13, beaten a nose, she took another race. This was ou January 15, when, at five and a half furlongs run in 1:07, she defeated Nila. Mike Molett and seven more opponents and won by four lengths. January 20 she ran three-quarters in 1:1;!". and won from Giwd Intent by a length and a balf, with Genova third and Ive others unplaced. In her next and last race at Juarez she was unplaced and was then taken to Oakland. There she was twice beaten before winning-, but was placed in botli races. March 2 she defeated Dr. Dougherty. Silk and five others over the Futurity course in 1:12, and on Marcli 10 won again, this time at three-quarters of a mile in 1:14, with Redeem second, Roy Junior third and six unplaced. Then she encountered a streak of non-success and did not win again until April 25. when she ran three-quarters in 1:13 and won easily from Adena, Billy Myer and four more. This was followed by three reverses, but on May 0 she covered the Futurity course in 1:10 and defeated Salvage, Dareiugton and three others. That was her last success at that Oakland meeting. ll.r next victory was at her old stamping ground. Salt Lake City. There, ou June 15, she ran three-quarters in 1:14 and won from Godfather, Lena Lech and four more. She only won one more race that year anil that was at the same track, July S, when, at the same distance and in the same lime, she defeated Marchmonet, Lena Lech and six other useful sprinters. As a four-year-old in 1011 Lady Pauchita was not raced much in comparison with the year before, probably because she was ailing in some way. However, she paid her way by winning three races five and a half furlongs in 1:07, at Juarez, March 22; three-quarters of a inilo at Juarez. March 30, in 1:12, and three-quarters at Ogdeu. May 18, in 1:10. She was in good condition in 1012 and was first, second or third in twenty-one of her thirty-two races. Her first victory was at Coeur dAlene, June 15, when she defeated Oxer. Tommy McGco and seven others at three-quarters over a muddy track in 1:15. At Salt Lake .City, July 15. she ran three-quarters in 1:12 and defeated Rigliteasy, Enfield. Last, year Lady Pauchita was in better form than ever before and. besides the stake races already enumerated, won nine purse races, in addition to which she took second place seven times and was third in six races. Her campaign for the year began at Juarez. There, in contesting eleven races, she won two purses besides the Dos Itepublicas Stakes and was second or third in four more. The Dos Itepublicas was a dash of seven-eighths of a mile over a heavy track. This she won by three lengths in 1:30. with Enfield second, Irish Gentleman third and Kootenay. Vested Rights, Dutch Rock. Upright and El Palomar unplaced. Her last race at Juarez was on Marcli 15, and in this, at three-quarters of a mile In 1:11. she ran fourth to Kootenay, Irish Gentleman and Lackrose, the four finishing in a bunch half lengths apart. Then she was taken north to Coeur dAlene. There she ran second three times before winning. May 7 she defeated Mona Canomanii, Platinum, Elizabeth Harwood and Pride of Lismore at live-eighths of a mile in 1:00 and followed this iqi on May 10 by winning from Seneca, Imprint, Parlor Boy and Meadow- at five and a half furlongs in 1:07.
