Sam Heapy, the nephew of Sam Loates, is now thoroughly established as a trainer in Belgium. lie has over sixty horses under his care at Wavre. twenty of them being two-year-olds. Heapy can still go to scale at 12:: jioinids, anil will ride occasionally in important races. The death occurred Friday, March 0, after a short illness of Baron Alfred dAymer.y, who in his day was one of the most prominent gentlemen riders on the French turf. His chief successes were attained at I-a Croix-de-Bernay, where he rode Baron FInots representatives. News recently reached England that the good stallion Bridge of Canny has died at the Haras Chacabuea in the Argentine. This is a serious loss indeed for his owner, who bought him through Mr. I. Mann a year or two back. As the sire of Cantilever, Bridge of Canny will gain still further posthumous fame, but his place in South America will be ditbcult to fill. On the first day of the National Hunt meeting at Cheltenham, England. March 11, the Cheltenham Grand Annual Steeplechase of the net value of ,500 was won by "Mr. Stokes " five-year-old brown mare Meadowsweet, by Yankee Cainpo. She carried 150 ixmiuls and won easily from the favorite Tcnbury, which carried 154. Of her last six races, Meadowsweet has won four and been second in the other two.
