RINGING IS FRUSTRATED PALMETTO PARK OFFICIALS DISCOVERS ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD. Horse Carded as Country Boy Is Ordered Scratched from Second Race Under Sensational Circumstances Investigation Still On. Charleston, S. ., March 27. An alleged attempt lo put over a ringer in the second race at Palmetto Park today was frustrated by the stewards wh"n they denied Country Boy the privilege of starting. According to report. Country Boy was shipped from the track several days ago and the alleged ringer, masquerading as Country Boy, is said to have been Golllwogg. Country Boy Is a chestnut gelding and Golliwngg is a hrowu, but a lilieral application ot some chemical preparation gave thi; latter the required color. The stewards immediately began an investigation ami will keep the horse in charge until they have established his Identity. The horse was entered and was to have run in the interest of J. ONeill, a local man. His statements to the stewards left the inferenco that some ne was trying to put something over on him. L. II. Lester was carded as the trainer, but he claimed that fhe horse was turned over to him only tilleen minutes previous lo the time when he was required to report, at the paddock. Every indication pointed to the theory that a ringing job was intended. When betting was posted, then: was a rush to get aboard and the coiilident support Country Boy received aroused suspicion and started the investigation. Bets were immediately declared off and the horse was ordered scratched. If it was Golllwogg, the slsiriiers could hardly have picked a softer spot. Golliwogg was claimed in his last start by 1. J. Riley, who is said to have sold him lo a stranger in town that night at an advance of $..50 over his claiming price. The last ladies day was marked by an immense attendance or the fair sex. Ideal weather prevailed and good track conditions- helped to provide interesting sport. Ipsets were frequent, manv "good things" being bowled over. J. W. Hedricks colors wen; in front twice during the afternoon. His lirst victory came in the oener when Jesse Jr. won in a big romp over Dr. Larrick and Xetherbow. The latter was a supposed "good thing," but ran greenly and was never much of a factor. He will doubtless improve. Czar .Michael, which has heen bleeding in many of his starts, left his ailments in the stable today and also won in a romp. He was given, confident support by the lledrick confederacy. Jockey .Murphy was again the rilling star and scored on three winners. He began his success in the second when he landed Marty Lou in front, followed in the next race with a victory ou Xo Manager and also took the purse in the lifth race while, astride Colonel Ashineade. Poor riding brought alwut the failure of Duke of Shelby in the closing dash when Xolan rushed him so hard in the first three-quarters that he fell a ready victim to Barn Dances strong challenge in the stretch.
