TWO .CANADIAN TURFMEN PASS ON. Toronto, Out., October 3. Death has claimed this week two Canadians well known on the turf, though their activities were of some years ago. "Big George" Forbes, who died in New York, and was buried at Listowel. was of tho Woodstock family of that name, and with his brother, John, was prominent and influential in racing circles for many years. He was sixty-nine years old. and a native of West Zorra. He owned runners and trotters, and made a great success with Ioth. For the last twenty-five years lie had made his home in New York. Charles Nelson Gates, who died at his home on Beatrice street in this city, was one of the last of tho family whose name is connected with the history of racing in Ontario for many years going back to the days of John Bell, Jack the Barber, Jack on the Green, and the racing at the old Gates track at Little York, where the Queens Plato was run in 1S0S. and won liv James Whites Nettie. Two years later Nelson Gates John Bell won the Plate at Whitby. Charlie was at one time trainer for W. F. Maclean, and had been keeping hotels In Hamilton and Mount Forest since his retirement from the turf. He recently sold out nis Mount Forest property and returned to Toronto to live. Of a family of twelve onlv three now survive, his sisters. Mrs. Blong and Mrs. Black, and his brother. Allle.
