ENGLISH HORSE A WINNER SHORT GRASS TAKES HANDICAP AT LOUISVILLE IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION. Horse Is One of Lot Recently Brought to This Country by . P. T. Chinn and Is Looked Upon as Likely to Be Hard to Beat. Louisville, Ky., October 13. The recently imported Short Grass, a six-year-old bay horse by Laveno Outburst, that came over with the consignment brought here from England by Phil T. Chinn. and running in the Interest of "Honest" John Kelly, a noted New York sportsman, made uu auspicious American debut this afternoon at Churchill Downs when be accounted for the niilo and a quarter Hotel Henry Watterson Handicap of 00 in truly impressive fashion, over Cream and IMngling. At no part of the running was the foreign-bred racer extended and he leped along with a stride that seemed certain to carry him to the front whenever jockey Loftus called on him. Cream dominated the early running, with Short Grass under a steadying pull iu close pursuit of the leader. This order was maintained to the stretch turn, where Loftus gave bis mount a free rein. Instantly Short Grass moved up on even terms with Cream and passed her with ease in the last furlong. He finished under a pull and on his showing today will be a hard nut for the best of the racers in these parts to crack. Short Grass is a strapping horse and acted his afternoon as if he could gallop along at an even gait for any distance. He finished fresh and was instantly voted a crack by all the turfmen who watched his running closely. Dark weather was a big factor towards a decreased attendance today. Rain fell copiously this morning and a downpour threatened throughout the afternoon. As a result of the change in the going, there were many withdrawals from the different races. The betting fell off from yesterdays total, but was of fairly good volume. Only two favorites. Sosius and Chalmers, succeeded in scoring. Against the latter an exceptionally good price was obtained, mainly on account of support for Dr. Carmen and Grecian. Jockey Ted Rice, who was regarded as a crack rider in -tUcse parts- several seasons ago, and who was riding" abroad until the outbreak of European liostHitjes, had Ids lirst mount since his return to ArJialc.tllI afternoon when he piloted Thistle Beitera- supposed, good thing in the fifth race, with which he finished unplaced. Walter O. Farmer came over from his farm in Nashville to take in the sport and ship back several yearlings he owns that have been in Louis Taubers care. Jockey Metcalf will not be allowed to ride again at this meeting, having incurred a line of 550 and a suspension for the remainder of the meeting by the starter for insubordination at the post in yesterdays fifth race. Tom Brown, who acted as starter during the five-days race meeting . recently held at Richmond, Va., returned this morning and reported that the racing in the Virginia capital was a huge success and that plans are already under way for a more pretentious meeting next season.
