NOTES OF THE TURF IN OTHER LANDS. Mr. E. Hulton has had the bad luck to lose, at his I stud at Chevcley, his yearling filly by Desmond Rose of Asia. ; R. Wootton, the Epsom trainer, leaves for Aus- . tralia at the end of the present season. R. C. Dawson will then take over Mr. Hultons horses to train. The Hooton Park October meeting has been abandoned in consequence of the race course, staiids and stables having been taken over for the accommodation of troufis1 from Liverpol. The Hon. Francis Lambton, a brother of Lord Durham, who has been training for a few years at Newmarket, has been gazetted to a commission in the Guards. His training stable will be carried on as usual. : Lord Derby has unfortunately lost his valuable broodmare, Glasalt. Foaled Iii 189S, site was by Isinglass Broad Corrie, bv Hampton, aiid was the datu of, among others Gasalt II., Glacis. Bousplcl II., Queens Journal, Glacier and King William. Cantilever, which started favorite for the Triennial Produce Stakes at Newmarket September 2S, broke down when apparently going weR about a half mile from the finish. It was Cantilever that defeated the great American horse Tracery in the Jockey Club Stakes last year. The Liverpool Autumn Cup has closed with the excellent entry of forty-seven and. with only one subscriber less, the Lancashire Handicap, in the same program, lias been admirably supported byr owucrs. Tliff Grand Seftou, the Becker, and the Stanley Steeplechases are re-opened under revised conditions. F. Grundy, who headed the list of winning trainers in Belgium last season, has a big striug. of horses in training at the present moment at Epsom. They came over on the outbreak of war, and among their number are several jumpers. J. Dillon, who rode for the stable in Osteiid, has been assisting In schooling some of them. The Australian Jockey Club proposes to give 0,000 towards the war fund a magnificent example to sportsmen throughout the dominions. The Victoria Racing Club and the Newcastle Australian Jockev Club have each given ,000. The Kensingtou Racing Club has donated ,u0O to the Patriotic fund, aiid given the use of Its course to the military. As a singular occurrence the most valuable item on the Warwick card of September 14, the Coventry Plate of 300 sovereigns, was declared void owing to the absence of runners. The event closed iu Februarv with fiftv entries, and thirty were left in on the day of the race, including Son in Law, Collodion, Princess Dorrie and Other good performers, but nothing was even present to walk over. Polar Star heads the list of winning stallions iu the Argentine, his get having won forty-five races, worth 50,792. Of the other EUglish or Freneli-bred stallions, Cvllcne is third with thirty-three races, value ?2O4,0S3. .Tardy fourth, with twehty-seVUn races, worth 97,507, and Diamond Jubilee fifth, ills stock having secured thirty events, worth 05,-225. As to the rest, Val dOr stands eighth, and Le Samaritain thirteenth. Late in September T. H. Mcdcalfc, one of the best known Newmarket trainers, was found dead in a wood under near his house. Deceased had crawled under the brushwood and, lying on his back, had put a revolver in bis mouth, the bullet going through his head. The head lad, Arthur Norcott, said the deceased hail worries, but not about the stables. On the deceased was found a letter to Norcott, enclosing a check for 500. A verdict of "Suicide whilst temporarily insane" was returned. . Prior to sailing for South Africa on Saturday, September 20, Danny" Maher carried out an informal ceremony in presenting Mr. W. Lotiuga with a minature solid silver bat, 22 inches high, soldered upright, on a square plinth. It bears the inscription: "Presented to W. Lotinga by Danny Maher ou behalf of all the Jockeys in recognition of his very strenuous and successful work in organizing various cricket and football matches Jockeys vs. Champions in aid of charities." The yearling fillies bought by "Mr. A. Preston" at Doncaster were acquired by the Melton Studs, aiid they have gone t6 A. J. Gilbert to be trained for their engagements. The live are the grav lilly by Rol II erode Nicola half-sister to The Tetrareh, 1,900 guineas; brown filly by Rol Ilerode Alphabet, 500 guineas: chestnut filly by William the Third Ladv Chancellor, 000 guineas ; bay lilly bv Spearmint Oenone. by St. Serf, 200 guineas, and bay filly by White Eagle Byeway, 450 guineas. It is very satisfactory that the Melton Studs should be willing to acquire such fillies at this juncture. It may not be generally known that Mr. Joel purchased Absurdity dam of Black Jester and Absurd from, the owner of the Melton Studs. London Sportsman. . . ...
