ANOTHER STAKE FOR GAMER MRS. PAYNE WHITNEYS THREE YEAR-OLD WINS PRINCE GEORGE HANDICAP. Adverse Track Conditions Result in Small Field in Feature- Race at Laurel Syossot Wins Elk Ridge Steeplechase. Baltimore. Mil.. October 17. Gainer, Mrs. Payne Whitneys three-year-old, purchased early in the year for 2,000, was winner of the Prince George llandicap this afternoon at Laurel Park, and David Stevensons four-year-old Kidding, Syosset, took tin Elk Ridge Steeplechase Handicap. These were the outstanding features of a ood program offered for the third .Saturday of the meeting, which saw a larger attendance tnau on any previous day. A muddy track robled the Prince George Handicap of much of Its attraction, for had it not been fci the condition of the going. Andrew Millers Roamcr and James Butlers Pebbles would have been contestants. As it was, the. tield was reduced from the overnight entry list of nine to live, and one was added, Pomette Bleu taking the place of her stable companion. Tartar. The race served to thow that Ten Point, the big son of Jack Point, whir- earned his lirst real laurels at this tract two years ago, has gone back and is by no means the horse he once was. Syosset had little trouble in taking the Elk IUdge Steeplechase. There were only live starters. Unl Parrs Shannon Hirer, which defeated Syossot on the occasion of their last meeting, showed his usual speed and led for the lirst turn and a half of the tield, with Old Salt showing the way tc the others. Oaddy kept Syosset under a steadying pull and rod i! a patient race, ire did not make his move until half way up the backstretch on the last turn and when he did let the big sou of Migraine down, Syosset moved up fast. It was not until after the last fence was taken, however, that Svosset assumed the lead. Caddy had plenty in reserve and when he got ready he easily dis-IkjsmI of Shannon Hirer. Astute, making his first npwarance of the meeting, showed a good performance and Old Salt after running prominently for u mile and a half, quit badly; Edward MeBride has .secured a contract on lockey Connors for the coming year. Tile victories of the two-year-old Embroidery have not been profitable to her owner. She was again bid Up this afternoon, this time 1914.sh05 over her entered price of 1914.sh0V, and was retained. Colouel James, who was responsible for the bidding hi her previous effort, was the bidder again this afternoon.
