JUAREZ MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER. Extensive Improvements Undertaken During the Summer Now Nearing Completion. 1-71 Paso, Tex.. October 1". Turfmen and race followers generally will be agreeably surprised by the vast improvements that have been made at the Juarez track since racing closed there last spring. Superintendent Kecgan and a large force have been busy the entire summer building new stalls, changing the paddock, ollices, jockeys quarters and the promenade in front of the grandstand. There have been built 150 additional stalls, giving the plant stable accommodations for over 1.200 head. A wall eight feet high and half a mile in length has been built, enclosing the entire front of the track, giviug it a beautiful appearance and at the same time acting as a windbreak. Pour large adobe cottage have been constructed in connection with the new stables, to be used as sleeping t uarters for the trainers and stable help. Three large and commodious kitchens have also been erected at convenient points insitle the track enclosure. Mr. Kcegan and his force re-roofed all of the old stables. The amount of rooting material used would cover an area one mile and a quarter in length and twenty-eight feet in width. Probably the best improvement from the horsemans standpoint is the resurfacing of the track. It will be as fast as ever, but safe and with a line cushion. It will be possible for horses partial to a fast track to race well over the course even after the hardest kind of a rain, and there will be none of the sticky going that has prevailed iu the past. The most pleasing feature from the spectators standpoint in keeping with the beautiful appear-nnee of the entire plant, is the terraced cement promenade in front of the stand, making it pos-iible to look over the heads of those in front from any Krtion of the promenade. These improvements have been made under directions left by General Manager Matt Winn before his departure last winter and are in line with his announced intention to leave nothing undone to make the Juarez race course the most complete from all standMints of any race course in America. The sum spent for the improvements made the past summer is about 5,000, making the total cost ot the plant up to date almost three-quarters of a million dollars. Although the meeting is over six weeks away, horsemen are arriving daily. Among those already here are J. W. Parker with a string of eight from eastern Canada, and II. Mack and A. Hurry witli a carload from Helena. Mont. J. P. Ferguson is expected immediately from Vancouver. It. C, with a carload. If one was to judge by the response which horsemen have made iu entering their horses for he stakes to be run during the Juarez meeting commencing on Thanksgiving Day, it would appear that the 1014-1915 season at this well-known Mexican course will be the most successful vet held there. Din? in a great measure to the liberal-itv shown to horsemen by Manager Matt Winn and his associates, the Jockey Club Juarez has constantly grown iu favor. So successfully has the sport been conducted by the Jocker Club Juarez .that each season has seen an extension of the ichcdiilcd 100 days originally provided for. And in Keeping with this spirit, the management lias met the horsemen more than half way. It will W remembered that last season .Manager Winn caused purse values to be raised during the last thirty days of the meeting, which action was not alone favorably commented upon at the time, but doubtless in some measure accounts for the present record breaking number of entries received for Iht stakes which will have their closing on Tburs-jday. October 29. These features, six of which are for all ages, while two are for present two-year-olds, are as follows: For All Ages. Stake. Distance. Value. J Juarez Handicap G furlongs ,5oo Xavidad Handicap 1 mile 1,500 Ano Nuevo Handicap. ...1 1-1G miles 1.500- . Dos Hepublicas Handicp7 furlongs . 1,500 El Paso Selling Stakes.. 1 mile 1,200 Hio Grande Sellg Stakes.O furlongs ......... 1,200 : For Now Two-Year-Olds. Cbapultcpec Handicap.. ..0 furlongs ......... 1,500 Chihuahua Sellg Stakes. .0 furlongs 1,200 1 Though these are well- wortli: "winning-, the "thing that directly appeals . to the greater majority of tje liopJeinpn who will ship their charges to Juarez j Is the fact that there will be no purse race through- " out the meeting which will have a monetary value of less than 00, wbjjp from time to time special ; handicaps will be fraineil to take care of the racing material not otherwise provided for. And . in addition there will bo new stakes offered for the two and three-year-olds. A feature about the meetings at the Juarez track that appeals directly to those who campaign their horses throngbdut the warm winter months of this southern country, is that the climatic conditions are pleasant and when the meeting comes to a close there remains just time enough to freshen the horses so as to have them ready for spring and , summer raciug.
