4. J TIMELY GOSSIP FROM KENTUCKY SOURCES 1 i is ? t t l t a 1 1 i a I 1 ! 1 1 1 ; : , . 1 ! 1 . - t Cincinnati, O., October 20. So open is the Latonia 1 Cup. to be run Saturday. November 7, that prac- 1 tically every trainer with an entry in this event pointing his charge for this rich race, with its 1 ,500 in added money and a silver loving cup. These 1 trainers have been spurred on by the knowledge that the great four-year-old, Grea"t Britain, would not be a starter in the race. Trainer John Walters has . turned the son of The Commoner out for the winter 1 and did not even bring him to Latonia. Secretary Maginn will announce the weights for this race Wednesday, November 4. . The victory of Chalmers in the Fort Thomas Stakes last Saturday is sure to make this fast sou of Peter Quince one of the winter favorites for the big Derby races of 1915. It is likely that Chalmers will race again before ho is retired for the season. His trainer, J. S. Hawkins, will not hesitate to race him time or two more here during the present meeting if the weather continues good and track conditions are favorable. Trainer J. O. Keene, who has in his care that other good son of Peter Quince, Solly; which was beaten a neck by Chalmers iu the Fort Thomas Stakes, does not think that Solly will cut much figure in the races of the Derby distance next season, but he is of the opinion that he will be a sensational sprinter. Solly has a high turn of speed, but he weakens at the end of his races when asked to beat such horses as Chalmers and Emerson Cochran. The- lameness of the latter colt, which kept him out of the Fort Thomas Stakes, is not serious, and there seems to be ho doubt that, the son of Jim Gaffney, with a winters rest, will come back to the races next season in sound condition, and stand training for his Derby engagements. President Charles F. Grainger of the New Louisville. Jocfccy Club who was a visitor at the Latonia races Saturday, stated that there would4 lie no change in the Kentucky Derliy the coming season and that the New Louisville Jockey Club would again add 0,000 to the race. Mr. Grainger expects to be able to visit Latonia once or perhaps twice more I before the meeting is over. While F. J. Pons has but two yearlings now. both of his own breeding, he has no less than nine weanlings at his blue grass" farm at" Madison, Tend., which he sets great store by. Six of the number are bV Tony Bonero and three by Great Heavens. Tony "Bonero is a son of Sain and Great Heavens is bv Star Shoot. Those .youngsters embrace three ! colts and fillies. The foals by his good horse Judge Wright will not begin to come- uritiT next spring. Mr. Pons now owns twenty-six. broodmares and all Of-thenv -1 are young stud matrons, with the exception ! of Elsie Brnmhlp. which s not especially old. This season hoi niatod eighteen of these mures to Judge Wright. Grent Heavens and Touy Bonero. The . othr eight young tuaros just retired, which will lie mated next season for the first time, and include , Gagnant. Pliant. May Lutz, Grace Kimball, Talla-hassie. . Lady McGec and Busy Miss. Mr. Pons will 1 race no horses this winter and has all his thoroughbreds at present at his farm, including Judge . Wright, Lahore and John Furlong. He still thinks .olin Furlong will race again, hut he will make no , attempt to train him until next summer. He wjll I then be eight years old and ho will have him taken , up and race him againvif he shows signs of being c able to stand training. He thinks he will get Lahore back to the races next season and he has no doubt of Judge Wrights ability to race another year. . Should the latter show sigus of weakness after his 5 winters rest, however, he .will be retired pernianent- - ly to the stud. Both Lahore and John Furlong are geldings, and if they fail to stand training again 1 tlioy will be used for saddle horses on the farm. P Sheridan will turn none of his horses out this 3 winter, but will take his entire string to Juarez- for r the racing season there, including Ids speedy sprinter p Back Bay. This gelding and Pan Zareta are likely to meet frequently during the Juarez winter meet-: - ing. as thev did last stimuier on. the Canadian tracks, . W. W. Darden lias also expressed an intention of f 1 1 1 1 . 1 I ! ! . , . 1 . , I , c . 5 - 1 3 r p - . f taking his stable to Juarez, including Little Father and his good two-year-olds, Margaret D. and Dortcii. t This will be the first time in a number of years that this turfman has been represented at a winter race meeting. Another turfman of note who has signified an intention of spending the winter at Juarez is J. C. arilani. He anticipates shipping to that track his older horses, Morristown and Olga Star, and some v four or five yearlings to race in the two-year-old events of 1915. f The rate of S.G0 by express for eaeli horse which t Eugene EIrod has been able to arrange for horses going on the Juarez special, which will leave here 1 Monday. November 9. is within a few dollars of c what the same shipment would cost by freight from t Latonia to El Paso, Tex. 1 Kay Spence will ship all the horses of his string and those owned by W. J. Weber, which lie has in i training at Latonia, to the Juarez course on the 1 special wtih the exception of his three-year-old geld- ; ing, Hodge. He lias arranged to turn Hodge out at 1 John D. Carrs farm near Lexington at the close of the meeting here and will not take the gelding up 1 again until he returns to Kentucky next spring with tlie horses he will race at Juarez. It was at Carrs farm that Old Rosebud wintered last season. Spence 1 has had so much bad luck; this year with Hodge that lie has concluded to make this move with him. though the gelding raced in line form at Juarez last winter. W. M. Wallace did not bring his three horses to -Latonia from Louisvillle until Friday last, thinking ! perhaps they would benefit by a slight rest up there so what racing they do at Latonia will be the last two weeks of the present meeting. Ho at present only lias here tlie two-year-old Yacnac and another youngster of that age, and the good four-year-old lilly The Widow Moon. This daughter of Stalwart has had bad luck this autumn in falling into races where she lias been up against the best sprinters in training. She is doing nicely, however, now as usual, and can be expected to win a purse or two before the meeting winds up here. Trainer J. O. Keene has formed a company witli turfman J. Cloher and trainer T. Taylor, a brother of jockey W. Taylor, and this firm have gathered together already a string of six horses, which will lie shipped at the close of the meeting here to the Jockey Club Juarez track in Mexico Tor winter rac-, Jug. The horses they have at present in thier string for -this purpose are a yearling colt by the Futurity winner Orinondale: a yearling chestnut filly by Order, out of Winnie Cook, by Montana, and tlie older performers Imperator, Noisless, Osmonde and Tatt-, ler, the latter being their latest purchase, they securing this three-year-old out of tlie stable of J. M.. Hendrie. Jockey W. Taylor will go to Mexico witli this string to do the stable riding as well as accept all other outside mounts during the hundred days or more winter racing there. "Dick" Williams who is here with tlie yearlings ; entered in the fall sale at Latonia by J. G. Hol-; ! land, reports that Holland has fifteen weanlings in partnership witli him, eight by IFilarious and seven bv Martinet. Seven of these youngsters are colts and eight fillies. They mated 37 mares to these two stallions last spring. T. II. Baxter lias shipped the well-known perforin mer. Forehead, to trainer Dave Vititoe here for him to take to Juarez for the coining winter meeting. Forehead came here from Norfolk, Vn.. and his owner now thinks he is sure to stand training for racing tlie coming winter. He was quite a good performer when racing in the stable of J. B. Respess and won a number of good races for that turfman. He is now six years old. A. n. Vivell has already five horses in his siring, including the smart lilly Casaba, which finished sec-7 ond at Latonia last Friday, to ship to the Juarez track when the meeting closes here, ne will also take there to ride for him . the coming winter his promising apprentice rider J. J. Campbell.
