LESTER REIFFS REINSTATEMENT. The news that the stewards of the Jockey Club have, after a lapse of thirteen years,- removed the ban placed on the American jockey, Lester Reiff, in 1901 came as a surprise to many racing people. The circumstances leading up to Reiffs warniug-off sentence created a tremendous amount of discussion at the time, and quite a number of people have never wavered in their belief that the American was harshly, if not unjustly, dealt with. Certain it is that Reiff finally got iuto trouble over a horse which never did any good afterwards and was a notoriously ungeuorous animal. In matters of this kind, however, the stewards are in tue best position to judge of the culpability or otherwise of individuals upon whom suspicion falls, and equally certain is it that such a drastic step as warning off is never taken unless evidence of the most convincing character is forthcoming. However, let that pass, and in congratulating Reiff on the latest action of which he is the subject, remember only that he was a remarkably tine horseman, whose average of wins during the few seasons he fpent with us was a really excellent one. Loudon Sporting Life. Lester Reiff was one of a number of American jockeys who went to England some years ago and for a time carried all before them. One of the effects of the "invasion," was a pronounced chauge : in the style of riding, and though some of the English owners and riders were sufficiently conservative to stand by English methods, the success achieved by Sloan, the Reiffs, and others was so pronounced that the American seat and style of riding became fairly generally adopted, and remain so to the present day. The elder Reiff rode the winners of several important races, his most notable success being achieved in the Derby of 1901, when he rode AV. C. AVhitneys Aolodyovski. lie was likewise on the back of the Derby winner in the St. Leger. For this race Volodyovski was favorite, with odds of 0 to 5 on, but was beaten by L. de Rothschilds Doricles. which started at 40 to 1 against. Reiff also rode David Garrick when he won the Chester Cup. His most successful year was 1900, during which he rode 143 winners and finished at the head of the list. He was warned off in the course of the following year. : ; : 1 1 ; " I
