SCHORRS DORVAL PARK DERBY WINNER, DAVID CRAIG : 4 Quite a good three-year-old was David Craig iu last summers racing, but not nearly so good a race horse as Itoainer or his own stable mate, ,Luke McLuke. However, there is one point worthy of considera- tion in his "case. Inspection of his -breeding discloses that he is exclusively English in his lines of ancestry, and strikmg.y good lines they are. It thus comes about that when David Craigs racing days are over his owner will still be in possession of a young horse, which may prove a highly successful and valuable stallion. He is a grandson of Ayrshire and it is really quite remarkable how the male descendants of that Epsom Derby winner of 1SSS are making their mark in nearly every country iu which breeding of the thoroughbred is carried on. Some of the names in the pedigree of his dam .seldom crop up iu such compilations, but they are nevertheless of unimpeachable purity and desirability. David Craig did not cause any grpatstir in the racing world when ho was a two-year-old. : He won three races out of nine attempts, all being purse races. Ills first success was In a dash of five-eighths of a mile, at Hamilton. June 20. It was a race for maiden two-year-olds and he won by four lengths in 1:01 from such bad racers as Yankee Tree, Jezail, Supreme, Tholnia J., Peacock. Perpetual and Good Will. Previously he had rail unplaced in three races. This initial success lie followed up by winning again at his next essay, another sprint of live-eighths, at Fort Erie, July 5, fn which, over a slow track, he won from Lyric Muse by a length and a half if 1:Q4., with Beau Pere third, Itatlna and Suwanee lwing unplaced. A, Latonia, October 27, he ran last at three-quarters in a race won by Waterbass. with Maud 15. L. second I.nd Dr. Samuel third. Next on November 1 he improved by running second to John Gund at three-quarters ovtr a heavy track iu 1:15, Claxcnette finishing third and five others being unplaced. In his next race, November 4, he was again second.; this time beaten a half length by GracLla at three-quarters in 1:14and. lucre was some merit in this performance because Gracilla was a speedy filly and behind him were Belloc, Waterbass, Emerald Gem and Editli W. He then closed his racing account for the year on November S. when, over a muddy track, at three-qu? -ers of a mile, he won by three lengths from Hodge, with Maud, 1!. L. third and San Vega, Bayberry Cnndkv Birdie Williains and Shelby Belle unplaced. He had up 100 pounds to 120 on Hodge, and "the time was 1:17. .When David Craig next apepared in public he gave convincing evidence of having made great improvement wliile in winter retirement. He made his debut as a three-year-old in "a purse race at the Churchill Downs track, Louisville, May 12. Itr was a sprint of three-quarters of a mile, with some fast horses engaged and, running the distance in 1:12, he won by three lengths, witli Hawthorn second and Wilhite third. il carried 100 pounds to 112 on Hawthorn, and 107 on Wilhite. Sebago, Miss Thorpe, Magnet, Princess Janice. Itoadniaster, Solar Star and -Toronto ran unplaced. The good impression made by this line display r.f high-class speed was confirmed thrpe days later when, carrying the same weight, he won at a mile in :."?! and easily defeated Itoadmaster, 104; Magnet, 105 Solar Star, 107: Dr. Samuel, 07, and two lesser lights. He was then taken north fpr a1 campaign jover-the Canadian tracks, in which he was destinod to Win .great credit. -w. i i.--i- 5- - mMMW His first startther.rwas at Avoodbliie Park, Toronto. May 23. and was not a success. It was a three-quarters dash for a purse which Dorothy Dean won in l:12Vf,, with Calgary second and Privet Petal third. She Carried 102 pounds. David Craig had up 108 pounds and finished fifth. This was a good work-out for the Woodstock Plate, at a mile and an eighth, for three-year-olds, which was run May 23. The starter, weights and order of the finish were: David Craig. 117; AVaterbass, 117; Sandbar. 117; Martian. 100; Brave Cunarder. 117; Privet Petal. 117; Runway, 117; Fuzzy Wuzsy, 104, and Banio Jim, 109. Waterbass was favorite in the mutues at 315 to 10 and David Craig second choice, but the latter came through with flying colors and scored his first victory in a stake race when he won from AVaterbass by a length in 1:54. He did not fare so well in the Toronto Cup. run May 30, at the same distance. AAaterbass here took revenge for his AVoodstock Plate defeat. Carrying 104 pounds, he led all the way and won from Nightstick. 115 pounds, bv a length and a half. David Craig carried 10S and finished a close up third. The race was rim in the track record time of 1:52 and Pardner, Cabaret. Dorothy Dean, Calgary. Bleck-Eyed Susan, Floral Park. Kingly and Lochiel ran unplaced. From Toronto he was now taken to Montreal and, on June 4, won a purse at a mile over the Blue Bonuets track in 1:30, defeating Sir Blaise, Kingly and seven more useful racers with considerable ease. Four days afterwards, at Dorval Park, he attempted to give away much weight to the other starters in the King George Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, but failed. Barnegat. 102"pounds. won: Tactics, 107 pounds, was second, and David Craig, with ll.S pounds, finished third, with Pardner. 105. and Airey. 103 unplaced. Then came his greatest triumph. The International Derby of 0,000 was the prize of the year for three-year-olds and the starters were: David Craig, 124 pounds: Gainer, 122; Luke McLuke. 127; AAater-t.ass, 124, and Black Broom, 119. There is no reason to doubt that Mr. Schorr, while starting both colts, relied upon Luke McLuke to win the ricli event. But the big son of.Ultlmus and Midge was in a wayward mood that dav and refused to extend himself until too late in the race to do more than land In third nlace. But David Craig worthily upheld the honor of his stable by taking the lead on the last turn and final winning from Gainer by a length after a gallant struggle throughout the length of the homestretch. Luke McLuke finishing six lengths behind Gainer. Being new and raw. the Dorval track was a slow one this year and the race was run im2:08j It-Was of the net value of 15,000 and it was winning it that made Bavid Craig third horse in the money-winning record of the year. In the Hamilton Derby, run June 23. lie had up 125 pounds and ran third. Sandbar carried 112 pounds and won in 2:0i bv a half length from AVaterbass. 122 pounds. It was a fluky race and David Craig did Mnself no credit when he finished eight lengths behind AVaterbass. But it may be that his severe race at Dorval Park had affected him unfavorably. July 1, at the same track, he ran a much better race when, with 109 pounds up. he ran a close second to the good four-year-old. Nightstick. 10S pounds, in the National Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, run n 1:53. Kleburne was third and Dorothy Dean one of the unplaced ones. His last winning race was:af Fort Erie. July 4. in the Fourth of Juy Stakes, at a mile and seventy yards, in which, with 114rpounds up. he defeated Kleburne. 114: Lochiel. 102: Tactics. 107; Dorothy Dean, 109; Nightstick, 110, and Barnegat. 107, winning from Kleburne by a half length in 1:44. He then, with 125 wounds up, ran a good, race in the Canadian Derby, when lie finished third to Dr. Samuel and Tippecanoe, each of which carried 107 pounds. The race was run in 2:04. and his rival. AAaterbass, was in the unplaced division. He was also beaten in his remaining four races and was sent into winter quarters with the following record and- pedigree: Year Age. Sts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp.
