NEWMARKET THREATENED WITH INFECTION. I have it on the authority of one of the mo:;t eminent resident trainers, who has had many good horses through his hands, that a great scare has been set up :tt Newmarket by the news that immediately after the December sales so that it shall in 110 way interfere with Messrs. Tattersalls business a remount deiot will be established sit headquarters. Hitherto, he says, the advent of troop horses in that locality has hardly been thought of, and when it was mooted arrangement were made for quartering them outside Newmarket proper and its immediate vicinity. Dire consequences will result to all associated with tiu liorse-breediug industry should this scheme be carried out. Troop horses are collected from all parts of the world, under conditions which lend themselves to the passing on of disease, more particulir-ly fever and strangles, the spreading of which defies all veterinary skill, no matter what precautions sire taken to prevent it, The outlook, therefore, is serious for Newmarket, and having regaid to the enormous interests at stake, my correspondent writes that it is incomprehensible that qualified persons could have suggested the formation of sucli si depot, for it cannot fail to disseminate disease and will possibly do incalculable harm to the breeding and racing studs locsited ar Newmarket. If farm buildings in a healthy locality cannot be found to accommodate this huge an.l mixed equine influx, lie suggests that it would bo wiser and more considerate to erect stabling in a suitable district far from any town, and so rcdue.s the risk of Infection as far as possible. He ad;s that he is confident that a substantial fund could quickly be raised to assist in the carrying out of such si project. Tlie suggestion is fraught with . common-sense, and it is to be hoped that it will . commend itself to the consideration of the au-I thorities, and that some other locale which docs I not -swarm with the most valuable horses will bo selected.
