HANDICAP TO PAN ZAKETA FLEET FILLY FROM NEWMAN STABLE CARRIES 132 POUNDS TO VICTORY. Speedy Daughter of Ahe Frank Sets All tho Pace and Wins From Kocnir by a Head in Sun-r v-days Fea-ture Race at Juarez.. Bl Paso, Tex., December 13. In todays feature race at Juarez, a three-quarter mile -handicapr .1. F. and II. S. Newmans great four-year-old tijly, Pan Zareta, carried the exacting impost of 132 lMHinds to a head victory over former jockey Shillings Hocnir. Pan Zareta was making her first start of tiie season here and in spite of the high weight she was asked to carry, sue ruled a well supported odds-ou favorite. Jockey Loftus had tho mount and taking her into the lead with tho rise of the barrier, set the pace all the way. His over-coniidence nearly cost Pan Zareta the purse. She had a margin of several lengths in the stretcn and he was letting her loaf along, thinking she. had her opposition soundly beaten. Jockey Gross brought Hocnir up with a rush right at the end, however, and Loftus barely got Pan Zareta going in time to avert defeat. The Newman tilly is the idol of the local race-going public and the outcome of the incident naturally was received with much relief and satisfaction. The filly was warmly applauded both in parading to the post, and upon , her return to the winners circle. Pan Zareta was one of two winnlng-cfavontes, Acumen being the other. There was a large attendance at the track and tho weather was beautiful. I. Striker, owiier of Thomas Hare, lodged a protest with the. stewards that Hard Ball carried threu pounds less than his correct weight in the xace that he won yesterday. The stewards sustained the protest and awarded first money to Kelsetta, second to Thomas Hare and third to Brando. The form charts show Winifred D. fourth by a neck, but the official placing in the judges book records Brando as being fourth. Jockey Hartwell was suspended by starter Cassuly for ten days for disobeying post rules In the third race. George Swain, before leaving Kentucky for tho Juarez track, turned out his two-year-old gelding, Briny - Deep, at a farm near Louisville; where In? will let him remain until next spring. He had hoped to bring tho son of Cunard to Juarez this winter. The two-year-old. however, was crippled in his last start at Latonlaand as he was slightly bowed in both front legs, there is no chance to train him again for several months. Swain seems to think that he may round to, so as to race next spring. .nf t may tie midsummer before he again faces the barrier.
