ELIGIBLES At this writing the lield for tlio ICentucky Derby iu which the flower of the east will be pitted against lac champions of the west looks like the largest In the history of the Kentucky classic Here classicHere in Lexington at the Kentucky Association course quite a number of eligible are belli trained for the big race and not a few of them have shown great speed in their trials so that it is not at all im ¬ probable that the prize may be won by a wcsternow ntrt horse The best of our lot are Maj T C Mc ¬ Dowells Manager Waite Jack Bakers Emerson Cochran and Pif Jr J S Hawkins Clalmers and Dr G M Millers For Fair W J Voung is sanguine of the success of Leo Ray which has been oin real gms and William Perkins is sending Tetan along in line style Some good lillies too are eiiaed but I hardly think precedent will be broken this year and the race go to one of the gentler sex Judged on last years form Kmerson Cochran stands Out as the best of our lot but Manager Waite be gtn his racing career iu most auspicious fashion by defeating Chalmers in a fourfurlong dash at the last Lexington spring meeting Manager Waite next ran unplaced to Luke in UK Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs and followed this up by an easy win over Dr Carmen Superhuman and Star Shooter the same course but met with some accident shortly afterwards and was wiselv laid bv for the rest of over the season Manager Waite now seems to be progressing quite in the right way and gives every satisfaction his popular trainer whose white black sash has ere this been carried to a wellearned victory in Ken to ¬ tuckys greatest race Here is the pedigree The colt is of course iliuendorfbred not quite of tlie finished appearance due probably to his colonial descent one usually looks for in race horses of the highest class iu this country but a good hard rugged sort big enough ami strong enough to pack tins weight and stay the distance and likely ennigh in time to develop into a cup horse of merit Manager Waite Is also bred to make more than average improvement fiinn his two to his threeyearold form and he would certainly have my vote if I were sure that he would li lit and ready on the day of the race Manager Waite as his pedigree discloses is strictly thoroughbred and eligible for registration in the English Stud Hook Watercress Manager Waites sire got some high class race horses notably Waterboy Watercolor Watervale Nasturtium and Hessian which is of close kin to Manager Waite Watercress was possessed of a good leal more class as a race horse than the average Englishbred stallion that has landed on these shores in the last twentylive vears Watercress won the Prince of Wales Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot the one and threequarter miles Liverpool St Leger ran second to Orme for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and third to La Flechf for the St Leger Orine and La Fleche were of course racers of the highest class and It was no disgrace to be beaten by them Springfield sire of Watercress was a tremendously fast horse and won the Champion Stakes and is the ire of Pastorclla Colins dam and of Sierra dam of Sundridge and of Sainfoin winner of the Derbv and sire of imported Rock Sand Wharfedale dam of Wa tencress was half sister by Hermit to Donnie Gal dam of Disguise anil Bella Donna dam of Beldame and Don de Oro Bonnie Doon the second dam was by Rupid Rhone a horse of Matchcm descent by that splendid broodmare sire Voung Melbourne Next iii line conies Queen Mary herself a daughter of the Herod horse Gladiator and a better lialauced pedigree than that of Watercress judged according to the EclipsellerodMatchem plan of mating it would be hard indeed to find findLa La Venganza dam of Manager Waite is a thirteenyearold daughter of that splendid Australian race horse Abercorn which later in life was sent to England where he died some years ago Aborcoru was bv Chester a direct male descendant of Whisker through Cap a Pie and The Colonel a line which is as deail as Hector iu Kngland and I am unable lo find any mares of Whisker descent bar La Venganza iu the American stud books Malinger Waite is therefore but another example of the success which attends the ontoross theontoross toKnIaiid plan of mating Colonial the second dam was got by Trenton after he hail le bis trip to KnIaiid I saw the famous whiteheeled brown son of Musket and Frailty bv Goldsbrongh at tho Cobhaui Stud CobhauiStud In JSKM and a grander horse I never looked upon Trenton idood moreover should be highly tsteei I by our breeders here for Knight Errant a son ot bis got the champion Roamer and Midge olio of his daughters produced Luke McLuke and of course Colonial is the dam of Hessian Hessian bv the way was not only a real good race horse but some of bis offspring are racing with marked success abroail I nkol Tom by Hessian won last years Scandaiiavlan Derby and Boots which recently ran second lo China Cock for the Liverpool Cup has won some good races Wo liud a double cross of Goldshroiigh in thf makeup of La Venganza and this Goldshroiigh strain is highly prized in Australia Goldsbrongh was out of Sylvia by the Horml horse Fisherman and this MusketFisherman cross is the foundation of most of the best pedigreesThankful of Australian pedigrees Thankful Blossom also imported is a daughter of the Two Thousand Guineas winner Paradox and is followed by Tin Apple a daughter of Hermit giving a line return to the Hermit in Watercress The pedi ¬ gree runs on down lo that justly famous stud matron Maid of Mashani taking in another cross of the slay ing line of Toxophililo onroute Maid of Mashaiu is of course an ancestress of Cvllono the only horse ¬ since the days of Waxy to get four winners of the Derby ami lo Maid of Mashani trace such as Timothv I Her St Damien St Hilaire Winklields Pride sire of the Grand Prix winner Finasseiir Econen winner in France Sysonby Sir Martin and Star Shoot anil 1 unhesitatingly pronounce Manager Waite a good as the bestbred horse foaled on American soil engaged in this years Derby Should Manager Waite succeed in carrying off the hig event it would not only be a tremendously popular win but the hloodstook interests f this country would be greatly benefited as well for when the time comes for the horse to bo retired to the stud bred as he is with the kudos of a Kentucky Derby victory to back him up it stands to reason that the sou of Watercress would be accorded full patronage by our breeders Kmerson breedersKmerson Cochran is a bay by Jim Gaffney from Viola B by imported St Avoniciis and Iris been all through the spring giving great satisfaction to his trainer As a twoyearold Kmerson Cochran woii six of Ids twelve starts opening his campaign in the early mouths of the year at Charlostoi Comiii north be ran unplaced to Luke at Douglas Park but won in a stirring finish the Cincinnati Trophv at La Ionia from the speedy Brigs Sister Solly Pif Jr Chalmers etc Put by until autumn Emerson Coehran on September 27 at Douglas Park ran what I take to hi the best race of his career when from slow beginning he beat a clinking good lot of youngsters in a live and a half furlong dash ami strane a tosiv OVTJ one of the 1 t engaged had won his or her preceding start Emerson Cochran certainly run at the right end of it and must hold a big chance of winning the great race on May 8 Here is his pedigree I 7 West Australian M Emilia J Lexington 12 II Florlne Bine Ruin or j King Tom 3 12 Tomahawk I Mincemeat Brown Bread 10 K Tartlet I Donoister uoncastcr 1 Stockwoll 3 E was an excellent race horse and brother to Golden Maxim son of the Bend Or horse Golden Garter and out of Miss Maxim from Ventura by Virgil whose granddam was imported Emilia Australians dam by Young Emilius This is the great sire line No 2 from which come St Simon Bird IM teller and Fisherman The pedigree of Emerson Coeliran shows a remarkable doubling up of this No 2 blood for St Avonicus sire of his dam Viola 1 is also a member of this line and traces directly to Gramachree sister to Irish Birdcatcher Australian also figures as the sire nf Wildidle sire of Flirtation third dam of Emerson Cochran Resignation the granddam was California bred by Racine a tale male descendant of Lexington out of that truly great broodmare Imported Fairy Rose daughter of the famous Hungarian Kislier which won the Epsom Derby Iti 1S7C Flirtation was a race mare of no small merit and won nine races as a twoyearold seven of them stakes and her dam Flirt as well as Fairy Rose was one Of that wonderful collection of imported mares got together by th late Senator Lcland Stanford Flirt produced besides Flirtation Gorgo Flambeau Fidelia Faustine etc and was by Hermit out of Romping Girl a more than good winner by the Derby winner Wild Dayrell from Gay by Melbourne This is a good producing branch of the No 2 family and Emerson Coclirans pedigree is certainly a wellbalanced oio showing as it does frequent strains to Herod through Thormanby Vandal Lexington Kisber and Wild Dayrell well backed up by the Matchcm strains of Australian and Melbourne In short Emerson Coclirans pedigree leaves little to be desired desiredAnother Another interesting pedigree is presented by For lair a bay son of the Nursery stallion Fair Play out of the imported mare Fairy by St Pnisqnin It was not until lie had passed his third milestone that For Fair raised a winning flag But at the winter meeting at Now Orleans For Fair put in some brilliant performances on one occasion beating older horses at seven furlongs inthe fast time of 12 The south ¬ ern contingent all swear by him Winter form however does not as a usual thing spell Derby honors but the Fair Play colt is bred to l oth run fast and stay is doing all that is asked of him and is certain to be in 1 rnirU nn tln iinv f ibe race Here is his iKdigrce Imported to Hulled States flmported to Australia Imported to England EnglandIt It will at once be noted that For Fair is a Malchem in tail male and his sire Fair Play will doubt loss be instrumental in keeping this line to Matchcm going in the United States Fain Gold dam of Fair I lay Is in my opinion at least one of the most exquisitelybred stud matrons over brought to this coun ¬ try a daughter of Bend Or out of Dame Masliam by Galliard from Pauline bv Hermit and so on to Maid of Masham She is ancestress of one horse we all know could rim Sysonbv Galliard is of course by Galopin out of Mavis by the Herod horse and great broodmare sire Macaroni The Galopln strain is finely returned by St Frustpiin sire of Fairy dam of For Fair Fairy is a twin and her sire St Frusqnlii cele ¬ brated both us a raee horse and a sire is bred on quite the right lines his dam Isabel being bv the Matchcm horse Plebeian out of Parma by the Herod horse Parmesan Cretan Belle For Fairs second dam won the 50O sovereigns Kempton Park Waterloo Stakes and Is bv I lie Irishbred Piraeus son of Tncas and Maid of Athens by Solon Piraeus was si decent sort as a raee horse and won among oilier races the Liverpool Autumn Cup viw and onehalf miles The third dam is Wavelet a ready sort winning at all instances from six furlongs to throe miles and this ability to stay Wavelet has in remarkable slvlo trans ¬ mitted to her offspring She is the dam of Wavelets Pride one of the Ixst stayers of his day and time in England ami sire of a number of the greatest longdistance rnmiors on the English turf inreieiit years Judging from this For Fair should lack nothing in the way of stamina For Fair is unusuallv well sup ¬ plied with llerod blood There are to be found crosses of Parmesan twice Macaroni Thormanbv and B ticca liner close up in bis pedigree and also the Matchem blood crops out through Brown Agnes bvWest Australian dam of Brown Bread and through Australian Siwndthriffs sire and Joskin sire of Plebeian sire of Isabel dam of St Frusquiu Should For Fair by any lucky chance Mieeeed in winning the Derbv slakes the disciples of Bruce Lowe will lie quick to point out the inbreeding to the No familv for bitii For Fairs sire and dam are inomlMrs of this line although they do not strike a common jincestress until low down in the pedigree But how will Bruce Lowes adherents explain away the presence of so niinv outside figures right at tile top of the itcdigreeV No is neither a running nor a sire lint thi deductions of the Australian statistician and then there are St Frnsquin 22 Hastings and Spendthrift minus a figure at all right on the surface Despite all this 1 expect to see For Fair make a big name for himself as a race horse although a Derby victory may not fall lo his lot I predict thnt ills forte will prove to bo endurance jr Ji LEACH
