BUTLER ENTRY RULING DERBY FAVORITE Pebbles anil Last Coin Expected to Carry New Yorkers Colors in Churchill Downs Classic Louisville KV April 1 Unless during the next two weeks semie candidate looms up liy i pub lie performance at Lexington ts a sensational thrce ycareihl it is nearly a certainly tliat the standard l earers of lames Putlers stable will go t tlio post first choices for the Kentucky Derby run nn Saturday May S It seems probable that Mr Iut ler will lio represented iu the race by the unbeaten Last Coin and that sterling colt Pebbles lloth ol these grand threeyearolds are training most generously for the rich stake under It U IScnsoits charge at the New Louisville Jockey Club course and it is safe to say that no threeyearolds in training outlook these two Keenebrcel youngsters Some horsemen have a slight objection to Pebbles on account of the peacocky manner in which lie holds his head when walking around the stable This objection however is overcome by the great colt when he is in full action and he moves along in his work like a perfect piece of machinery There is no doubt that he is the favorite of the two among the outside trainers here and many good judges acclaim him as the ideal type of a Derby candidate These judges do not question Last Coins brlliant speed but they look upon Peb ¬ bles as the real stayer of the Butler stable lames Kowe trainer of 11 I Whitneys great stable lias applied for stabling accommodations at Hie Downs it is regarded as a certainty that the great unbeaten liliy Regret will be a sure starter in the Derby This daughter of Broomstick will have to carry only 114 pounds in the Kentucky classic which is regarded as a featherweight for a really highclass race mare There are many who lieiieve that even if she is the greatest racer in training a liliy cannot win the Kentucky Derby lull this is ridiculous to assume as the Epsom Derby lias several times been won by a liliy and that too in recent years There have never been many really good mares in Kentucky Derby races No one doubts tlidt there have been any number of Derby races that Bronzewing was good enough to win tilie unfortunately stacked up against Old Kosclmil one of the greatest threeyearolds that ever trod the Kentucky turf When Hound The AVorld ran in the Derby she was clearly in i run ¬ down condition and in no shape to contest against such cracks as she opposed that day In bringing Itegret to Churchill Downs trainer Kowe undoubt ¬ edly must have her in good racing conditon and if he sends her to the post like she was at Sara ¬ toga as a twoyearold she will have the greatest following of any liliy that ever carried colors in this big race raceReports Reports from the oast speak well of the training of S L Parsons two Derby eligible Phosphor and Sharpshooter This pair are credited with recently having worked a mile in a shade hotter than 140 and are said to lie training in grand shape for the coming big nice There are any number of wellinformed horsemen that concede the Parsons candidates a good Derbywinning chance especially as the pick of the stable will have in the saddle that finished rider T Loftu Sharp ¬ shooter showed last year that ho could stay by winning a mile and it has always been the talk of the track that Phosphor was really the lietter of the two Of the nine horses John W Schorr is MHicling to Lexington this week one is a Derby candidate Lindenthal This son of Star Shoot will be started a couple of times at Lexington to season him for the Derby and many fancy he has a chance for the big race owing to the fact that lie raced but little last season and won two of his live starts These turfmen think that lie may turn out to lie another Luke McLnke and his perform ¬ ances at Lexington will lie closely watched as a consequence Eel Crump another star in the Schorr stable is training well and has been worked several miles under 114 It seems probable that if the latter can bo gotten up to a couple of mile and a quarter trials before the nice that Mr Schorr may send both that colt and Lindenthnl to the post in the Churchill Downs race raceOf Of locallytrained candidates that are going along well in their Derby preparation those most fancied aside from the members of the Itntler string are Sam McMcelrin and Charter Maid in J E Mad dens barn and Little String owned by M 15 Grnher The latter recently worked a mile faster than 14 handily and on Saturday went six fur ¬ longs equally well in 11 Charter Maid the same day breezed a strong mile pulled up to a standstill in 149 and Sam McMockin worked the same distance in 144 These were the best works at the Downs on that day by Derby entries as Last Coin only went a mile in and Pebbles attended by Kilkenny Boy covered the full Derby route cantering in 222 breezing the lirst mile in 154 154Trainer Trainer Benson lias eleven horses here all three yearolds He says that lie has some promising l oyearolds this season but he left them all in the east eastEvery Every indication points to an enormous field for the coming Derby race The Qulnry Stable stars Trojan and Double Kagle are now at Lexington and are sure starters In the classic this spring While at Juarez last winter the owner of these eraels wrote Manager M J Winn that he believed Trojan had as good a Derby chance as any horse in training and as the son of Sir Wilfred Avon the Tnturity last year he must tie regarded as a most dangerous quantity in the coming big race The Derby this season will surely be the great race of the entire year and it was wise for the man ¬ agement of the New Louisville Jockev Club to provide extra accommodations for at least NOIIO more people this season as it is certain all records for attendance will be broken at the Downs this spring springThere There is much interest in a local way in the success of the youngsters that trainer Dan Lehan is training for John Churchill of this city who is a newcomer in racing One of these youngsters is a goodlooking bay colt named Old Charter by Cold Heels Pouting and another is a chestnut liliy Little Mother by Stalwart Stormy Petrel Mr Churchill is a relative of the former owner of the present New Louisville Juckey Club race track as well as the late Colonel M Lewis Clark lirst president of the Churchill Downs course If some of the youngsters he now owns turn out to lie good winners lie will undoubtedly extend his operations another season as he is a great lover of the sport sportAs As none of the Butler string will K to Lcxins in to race the stable porkoy Charles llorcl will ally himself during that meeting with some good stable and riile in a number of races including the stakes Trainer Heuson lias m objection to bis riding during the Lexington meeting as it will give him some pi cpa ration for the local racing season nt the Downs No mailer how many starters this stable has in the coining Derby it is understood Mint Borcl will have the mount on Pebbles in the bg race He greatly likes this great colt and the colt races generously for him
