UNLUCKY YEAE FOE JAMES BUCHANAN. Mr. JauK-s Buchanan did not experience a phenomenally successful time last racing season, having but three winners of a like number of races worth in all about SOU sovereigns, but he has met with a fair amount of success during his relatively brief turf career. Mr. Buchanan was l»orn in Canada in IS!!, but came to Scotland the following year. His colors were first borne successfully by an animal lKaring the queer name ot Little Red Kat, which won numerous races over short courses. Subsequently be became possessed of Epsom Lad. by 1-adus out of Divider, which he purchased 1rom Ixird Rose-berry. and wbieli proved a rare bargain. Epsom Lad bad won a couple of races as a two-year-old. but had accomplished nothing of note in bis second season. As a four-year-old, by which lime he was owned by Mr. Buchanan, be cpeiied the soastHi by defeating Diamond Jubilee and others lor the Princess of Wales Stakes, incidentally putting up three pounds overweight for the services of ioinoi. A little later he won the Eclipse Stakes by a bead from Ian. with Diamond jubilee again in the rear. lie was well beaten by Pietermaritz-!.;::-g in ilie Jockey Club Stakes, but re-established his reputation by beating Santoi. Volodyovski. Doriclcs. Merry ;al and William the Third — some •opposition this— in ibe Kempton Park Stakes. Altogether Epsom Lad won over 20,000 sovereigns for his fortunate owner in that year. Tlie following autumn Mr. Buchanan recorded a noteworthy handicap triumph with the five-year-old Black Sand, which, in the hands of Kempton rami in. easily defeated the lightly-weighted Congratulation in the Cesarewiteh. with Rightful third, the favorite. Elltu. fourth, and such as Volodyovski. Wargravc and Carabini among those unplaced. Black Sand bad "almost" won the race a twelvemonth earlier, but on that occasion Balsar-roch stood in the way. Mr. Buehanaii was hopeful of winning his second Cesarewiteh this autumn through the agency of Williams Pride, but the daughter of William the Third, though running with credit, was unable to do better than finish fourth. The previous sea.-on Williams Pride had credited lier owner with the Derby Cup. though it was only after a desperate race with Arda that the trophv was "lifted." Another good horse that rendered useful service Inst year was Marten, which won the Marlborough Stakes at Gatwick. following this with a yet more important triumph i;i the Prince of Wales Stakes at Aseot. But for the intervention of Florist, then at his best. Marten would also have annexed the Newbury Summer Cup. Kaces were also won in Mr. Buchanans c.dors by Cay Lally. Heather Moon. Draughtsman, Wise Symon. Mac and Trinity Square. Mr. Buchanan has yet to win a classic race. There were ixissibilities aliout Mountain Apple. which started jecnt favorite with Xormau III. in the Derby of 19 s. which race, however, resulted in the scnsalional victory of Signorinetta. — London Sporting Life.
