RECORD CROWD AT HAVANA ] * CHRISTMAS SAY HAD ITS USUAL EFFECT IN INCREASING ATTENDANCE. # Bunicc Flatters and Then Disappoints — Briar Path V Proves Another Deceiver1 — Dr. Cann and I Protagoras Win at Long Odds. c Havana. Cuba. Decemlior 25. — There was a tremendous gathering at Oriental Park tliis afternoon, the crowd being a record one for the new course. J Much enthusiasm was manifested, several close * finishes adding zest to the days racing. The club- J house is becoming decidedly popular with the natives. The betting was heavy, both in the niu-tuels and the fourteen books. Eunice was regarded as having the opening race : at her mercy and flattered her supporters by leading almost to the end. But then she gave way, and ] Mac. from the Bissell stable, won in a close finish a with Big Lumax. Briar Path, from the Bedwell stable, furnished , the disappointment of the following race by her j failure to finish lietter than third, Enver Bey and Minstrel leading her at the finish. , Maiden two-year-olds were asked to go a mile : in the third and the race finally resolved itself ; into a duel ln-tween Emily It. and Smilax. The ] former took up the task of pacemaking when Mary ] Blackwood quit and had enough speed left when ] Smilax challenged. I The fifth yielded up a surprise in the neglected ! l*rotagoras, which won in a driving finish with i Quick and Pierrot, the last-named a well-backed 1 ; choice. The final race was also marked by a hot finish, in which the 2tt to 1 chance. Dr. Cann, scored I over Lord Wells and lschgabibble. Jockey I.apaillc was suspended for ten days for • foul riding in cutting Briar Path off at the three-eighths post in t lie second race and Gardner was ; suspended for fifteen days for foul and reckless j riding in cutting off and fouling the others on the . first turn in the third race. Smilax was mixed up i in this jam, which was responsible for her defeat.
