Stallions bred in the United Kingdom, or out of f English mares, are playing a big part just now in a the States. The leading sire of the season. Broom - stick, is American-bred, being by Ben Brush, but t he is out of the imported English mare. Elf, by ■ Calliard. out of Sylvabelle. by Bend Or. His s stock up to the end of last month have won 18.130 0 pounds by aid of forty winners of 102 races. The e Irish-bred Star Shoot is a good second, but al- I- though he has had no fewer than seventy-two win- !- ners of 145 races, his total stops at a trifle under r 17.000 pounds. The English-bred stallion Ogden n the sire of Sir Martin, etc., comes third with h 1U,4 K pounds roughly, amassed by forty-nine e horses in ninety-eight events. Peep oDay, which h stands fourth with a total of 13,175 pounds, is 8 another English at all points, and he lias 136 races *J to his credit. He is by Ayrshire — Sundown, which [J was imported into the States in 1893. together with h Elf, Sylvabelle. and other mares bought here for r Mr. J. R. Keene. And so it goes on. and even n the native-bred sires in the first twenty have mostly v English blood fairly close up on one side or the e other. In the circumstances it is not surprising K that Mr. R. S. Sievier recently told a sporting R reporter in the States that he might arrange to 0 send over some of the best stallions and mares from ? England for breeding and racing purposes there and J* in Canada. Mr. Clarence II. Mackay intends sell-I ing his French-bred yearlings in New York some p time next month. They include sons and daughters J of Rock Sand, Meddler, Sundrldge. Uncle, Mor- . dant and Cingal.
