THOROUGHBREDS FOR CUBAN BREEDING. A clipping from a Cuban newspaper intimates that much will be dene to improve the breed of horses lor military purposes on that island. It says: "President Menocal and Secretary of Agriculture Nunez are firm believers in the use of thoroughbred horses for army purposes, a fact that accounts for their in-terest in racing in Cuba. In England and the United States the best results in breeding for the army have been obtained by the crossing of the thoroughbred strain with good, sound mares of ordinary breeding. This has 1 n a subject to which much thought bias been devoted by both President Menocal and General Nunez, and both share tbe opinion that a solution of the army horse problem is the infusion of thoroughbred blood. Both believe that larger and better horses possessing greater courage and stamina may lie obtained by the introduction of tbe thoroughbred stallion and the thoroughbred mare for breeding parpo—S in Cuba. It is pn hable that several stallions and mares racing at Oriental Iark at this time may be retained in Cuba for cr.iss-breeding with Cuban stock with a view to i hi lining a better standard for the Cuban army horse."
