Havana. Cuba. January 24. — Cuba is certainly a soft spot for iuy BedweJL He headed the list of winning owners here last winter and it is almost a certainty that he will come back and repent thli winter. During the first thirty days of the steetilig the Bedwell horses have earned close to ,01 . and this too. despite the fact that only the second division horses in the stable have been to the post. A majority of the good ones have yet to start and when Bedwell gets them ready they will be hard to beat. 1p to date 3,000 has been distributed among the horsemen and forty-one stables have earned upward of 00. W. ft Weant has wen ,525 with Conflagration and Zoroaster, and E. R. Bryson. with the few horses he has started, has won .siri. Scorpii. Pierrot and Earl of Savoy have been useful racers far this young train r. Hedrick has won ,200 and Jim Arthur ,875. Other horsemen who have upward of ,000 credited them are: A. L. Denny, .S75: J. W. Goldhlatt, ,770; Mrs. I. C. Johnson. ,0O0; B. B. Parsons, ,450; W. P. Reid. ,450; J. O. Burttschell, ,425; W. A. Carter, ,375; S. T. Tolon. .27o; O. Alexandra. ,245: 0. W. J. Bissell. ,230: R. J. Powers. ,225: W. B. Mitchell. ,175: It. Condon. ,125: w. Feuchter. ,125; J. D. Goodman, ,075. and J. Powers, ,070. Several horses have changed hands within the past few days. O. A. Alexandra disposed of Baby Sister to J. W. Stewart, and James Arthur purchased Tenor of Logan Denny. Arthur, by the way. has had some bad luck here. His horses contracted sickness at the Maryland tracks and it went all through his stable. Since his arrival here he has lost Patience. Wayfarer and a twoyeai old filly by Star Shoot. Tactics, Huzz Around and Water Lady, which were left at Howie, have recovered from their sickness, but the 1 -bailees are that no effort will he made to get them ready for the early meetings in Maryland. R. B. Stelle struck another one of his winning streaks last week and on Tuesday he again joined the ranks of the layers. Stelles horses, however. have done none too well and his stable is not near as strong as it was last winter. Harry Reagan is anotiier new liookniaker who is in line. Pat Shannon, who booked here a few days, left for New Orleans last week. The layers report a steady increase iu the betting, especially since the management set back the first race to four Oclock. The business men were a bit slow in getting out to Oriental Park and the change in the running of the first race from 2:30 to 4 oclock was made at their request. On Tuesday night last one of the biggest social events of the winter season in Cuba was held iu the clubhouse at Oriental Park. It was a dinner dance given by Senor Miguel O. Mendoza. one of the richest planters on the Island and a Member of the Cuba American Jockey Club. Elect 1 icians v brought out from Havana and varied colored lights were strung around the verandas and throotrboal the clubhouse. The trees all along the hands 1 av boulevard leading from camp Columbia to Oriental Park were also Humiliated with blue. pink, gre 11 and red lights. This dinner dance cost Benor Sten-doza over 0,000. Maurice and Miss Walto 1. the two professional society dancers, were brought down for this special occasion. Their fee wis ,000 for the night. Bustanoby. of New York, furnished lb-string music, being brought down at the special request of Maurice and his dancing partner. The dinner was served on the lower floor of the clubhouse and was prepared by the famous Italian cue who was in charge of the Miramar during tin- day -when it was one the famous resorts of Havana. This chef, by the way. is now in charge id the culinary department of the clubhouse at Orient. il Park. There were about MO guests, aasoag them President hfenocal and his wife. Frank Steinhart. Senor Ferara. leader of the Liberal party, the American ambassador. William Geaualea, and a number of the other foreign representatives. During the evening a number of the ladies and gentlemen strolled through the ciubrooB and participated in the play at the roulette wheels, faro and hazard games. This dance was said to be the greate I social event ever held in Cuba and the guests were made up of the elite of the island. Mr. Michael Sheehan. member of the Mary Ian 1 Jockey Club, is a recent arrival here and is much Impressed with Oriental 1ark. The tourists are now pouring in and they are making their presence felt at the course. During the past week son-little rain fell during tin? nights, but it helped rather than hurt the going, as the time made in the races will show. The track at Oriental Park is now a perfect one. The nature of the soil is such that a little rain makes the going springy and a good big downpour such as wire experienced so frequently last winter, would probably be welcomed by the horsemen.
