FAMOUS TURFMAN EXPIRES HERMAN B. DURYEA PASSES AWAY AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF POOR HEALTH. Was an Owner of International Repute and Winner of Great Prizes of Racing in England, France and His Home Country. New York. January 25. — Herman B. Huryea. who won the Epsom Rerby of 1!14 in England with lMir-liar 11.. ilit-d this morning at Sarauac Lake. N. Y. Mr. Iluryea had a violeui attack of grippe in London in the early autumn of 1914, which left him in a thoroughly weak and run down condition. He returned to this country in November 1!I15, and never thoroughly recovered. Mr. Iluryea was a member of th •• lackey Club and frequently acted as deputy steward for that organization. He was aNu ,i member of the 1nioit flub, the Meadow Brook Club, the Turf and field Club, the Brook. Racquet Tennis and other clubs, and various racing associations, lie was MM of the foremost all around gportsmea of America, his successes in yachting, shooling and other sports being pronounced. Mr. Huryea became identified with the turf shortly before the death of the late William C. Whitney, when his lirst horses of reputation were Acefull. WhorJer and Irish Lad. On the death of Mr. Whitney all his horses were leased to Mr. Huryea and raced in his name and colors during the year 1!H4 Artfals Futurity year. After this Mr. Iluryea raced his own horses on the American turf with marked success. He owned and raced such horse as Irish Lad. Ren Ran, McKittridge. Dreamer, Mediant and many other*. After the passage of legislation adverse to the inlerests of racing in America, Mr. Huryea chipped his stable to France and located a breeding and racing establishment there. He was one of the most success! nl American sportsmen who ever raced in foreign countries. He raced horses largely of his own breeding, including Sweeper II.. winner of the Two Thousand Gaineaa and favorite for that years Derhjr. Later oa he «roa the Derby of i*i4 with Durbar II., another of his own breeding. Resides these the famous horaea raced by Mr. Daryea in England and Frame included Mediant, winner Of the Stewards* Cap at Goodwood; Ranshee. winner of the French Thousand Guineas; Rlarnoy, frizzle. Hickory, Boyne, Shannon and many others. Mr. Rurycas death will be keenly regretted in France and Knghind. as well as iii this country.
