CANDIDATE FOR THIS YEARS DERBY. Of the two-year-olds of 1818 special note must be made of Figaro, a well grown, good-loking anil powerful colt by Sundridge out of Sirenia. bred and owned by Mr. L. Neumann, who has a second string 1o his bow in ArgOB. by the same sire out of Mes-ange. Of the two I take the former to be the better horse, and a good one in the bargain, but assuredly not a lucky one so tar. He began modestly in May. when he got no nearer than sixth to Clapperhill — which was giving seven pounds- I. isorb and Sure for tile Norfolk Plate, and the winner. 1 should say. was one of the smartest of his ago. but we have probably seen the last of the son of Thrush, i- leaner sold him to Mr. Whitney, for whom he should do good winning service in America. Figaro may not have been seriously fancied al his debut, but there was no mistaking the lone of tile market when next he came oat and started favorite for I he July Slakes, whicil he won in runaway fashion from Laramie. Rid dEcosse and the rest. This wa a stylish and merit rious performance and fully justified the conscience reposed In him for the New Coventry Stakes, in which he failed, a little unluckily, in my opinion, by a head to give seven pounds to Marcus. After that he missed several flattering engagements through going ami-s. and it was. I believe, against the advice of Gilpin that he ran his lasi race, with the ground hard and un-snfted to him. for the Criterion Stakes. A slow beginner, he lost ground at starting, but ran on gamely under severe pressure to be beaten less than a length in the endeavor to concede ten pounds to , Iop.x and Flaming Fire. It would perhaps have been wiser to keep him a I home that day. if only on Seconal of the condition of the turf, and it may be that lie will not readily forget the severity of the ordeal following on his previous hard race. ArgOS ran four times and his hurt was his best performance, although he wound up with what struck me as rather a fluky victory in the Middle Park Plate. — "Vigilant" in London tfoortsmau.
