i , , | | , i , I , l , , , I , CANDIDATE FOR THIS YEARS DERBY. Of the two-year-olds of 1015 special note must be made of Figaro, a well-grown, good-loking and powerful colt by Sundridge out of Sirenia. bred and owned by Mr. L. Neumann, who has a second string to his Ixiw in Argos. by the same sire out of Mes-auge. Of the two I take the former to be the better horse, and a good one in the bargain, but assuredly not a lucky oae m far. He began modestly in May. when he got no nearer than sixth to Ciappeibill — which was giving seven pimnda Ltserb and Sure for the Norfolk Plate, and the winner. I should say. was one of the smartest of l.is age. but we have probably seen the last of the son of Thrush, as Joyner sold him to Mr. Whitney, for whom he should do good winning service in America. Figaro may not have been seriously fancied at his debut, but there was no mistaking the tone of the market when next he came out and started favorite for ho July Slakes, which he won in runaway fashion from Laramie. Boi dEcosm and the rest. This was a Stylish and merit irious performance and fully ju-tificd the confidence reposed in him for the New Coventry Stakes, in which he failed, a little unluckily, in my opinion, by a head to give seven pounds to Marcus. After that lie missed several llattering engagements through going amis-, and it was. I believe, against the advice of Gilpin that he ran his last race, with the ground hard and mi-surted to him. for the Criterion Stakes. A slow beginner, he lost ground al starting, but ran on gamely under severe pressure to be beaten less than a length in the endeavor to concede ten pounds to Ierox and Flaming I-ire. It would perhaps have been wiser to keep him a I house that day. if only on account of the condition of the turf, and it may be that he will not readily forget the severity of the nrdaal following on Ids previous hard race. Argos ran four limes and his hut was his best performance, although he wound up with what struck me as rather a tluky victory iu the Middle Park Plate.— "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
