CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. James Rutwell will ride under contract to Andrew Miller the coming season in the east. J. McTaggart t is t ride for W. R. Coo. The Berliner Tageblalt states that during thirty-seven days lacing in Germany in 1915, ,803,815 -, passed through the totalizator. The schooling list at Juarez now consists of f Iseeit. Brighoiise. English Maid. Early Riser. Carrie . Orme. Loan Star. Captain Druse and Irish Kid. As showing what a difference success on the turf makes to a horses stud value in England, it may be mentioned that while Swynfords fee is ;500 guineas, that of his brother, Harry of Hereford, is I only nine guineas. Stern, the jockey, offered himself for service in the English army, but was rejected on account of his stature. M. Roy. the otlicial starter at An-teuil and Nice, will probably till the same post at the St. Sebastian. Spain, meetings. In connection with place betting it has been decided by the Victorian Racing Club committee that in future at the Flemington course at Melbourne. the bookmakers shall pay tirst and second when 1 there are seven starters, and tirst. second and third I when there arc eight or more starters. In New" South Wales last year licenses were I issued for 4!M race courses, the total lieing only twelve less than in P.tlt. There is no doubt as to , this state getting its full share of racing — and a tiit over. Our racing days in a year run pretty high up in the four figures, and some of the lixtures ; could well be dispensed with. — Sydney Referee. For several months past most people Identified I with racing in any capacity have been prophesying . a marked falling off In attendances at Sydney courses, but that is slower in coming aliout than anticipated. There is no doubt as to speculation 1 being lighter than a year ago. but race-goers are seemingly as numerous as ever. — Sydney Referee. Jockey Willie Median, son of Joseph Median of Ottawa, was a visitor at Montreal a day or two ago i on bis way home from Cuba, where he has been i riding for Dr. R. Hanley at Havana. Median broke down while reducing in tile tropical country. He is still under contract with Dr. Hanley and will i ride for him at the spring meetings on the Canadian i circuit. Totalizator management is not yet perfect at some New Zealand meetings. At the Oainaru New Year fixture CO tickets were run on Recorder alter . the field had passed the winning post in the Flying Handicap, with tin- horse named at the head of affair-. Probably the circumstances were explainable, but it i- not surprising thai Recorders backers ! made considerable fuss. No such thing call happen at a well regulated meeting. Various clauses of the Suppression of Public Betting and Gaming Act. which came into operation 1 in Tasmania on January 1. are decidedly drastic. The mere fact of a person being suspected of liet-ting in contravention of the act justifies his renewal from any ground by the committee or other governing body of any sporting club. At the Brighton meeting on New Years day this clause led to the removal from the course of several persons sii-pected of laying odds in opposition to the totalizator.
