WHEN THE VALET WAS FIRST EMPLOYED. "Argus" seems astonished that James Grimshaw should employ a "valet." Surely that eminent writer is awaie. if he ever visits weighing rooms, that a lightweight, riding perhaps in every race every half hour, with constant changes of cap. jacket, clothes, saddles and leads, could not possibly conduct his business without some such attendant. Besides, the attendant designated a "valet" is merely a person who waits uiKtn the jockey while on the course, and is no more to be dispensed with by a little lad like Grimshaw than actors with many changes can dispense with their professionl "dressers."
