CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. The Reno Fair and Racing Associations summer meeting will be. opened on July 1 and will continue for nineteen days, according to an announcement made at Reno. There is to be no reduction in stakes in South Australian racing, and the Adelaide Racing Club has just announced its policy in that direction. Tas-manian reports show a slight falling off in attendance but practically the same amount of business. Conditions in New Zealand are parallel with those in Tasmania. Mr. Robert Newell has had several horses that disappointed him in his Kings Plate expectations, but he feels confident he has struck the right one now to do the job in 1918. This is the chestnut yearling colt by Plaudmore — Lucasta, which he has bought from the breeder, Mr. Ed. Phair. — Toronto Globe. A peculiar incident happened at John Looneys Horse Lake Ranch last Monday. A mare by Aeronaut, out of Sunrise, seeing a draft mare with a two-day-old colt, ran at the colt like a dog after a rat, caught it about the middle of the back, crushed it to the ground and broke its back. The mother and W. E. Wood, manager of Mr. Looneys ranch, tried to get tlie mare away, Mr. Wood finally beating the mare off with a board. According to San Diego claims, the following bookmakers are expected to take part in the ring proceedings at Tijuana: From the east — Sam Bradley. Johnny Lewis. Fred Frankel. Enoch Hughes. Jess Hughes. Frank Maley, Harry Block, Harry Gardner, Gus Bluhm. Charles Walters. Barney Schreiber; West — Joe Harlan, Leslie Belt, W. I*. Kyne, Frank Dunleavy, Jack Atkin. Ambrose Dunn, E. L. Caress, Bob Sherwood, Johnny Glenn, Harry Jones, Joe Rose, Will Hall, Horace Paul. Joseph Clatterbuck of Dayton, Rockingham Co., Va.. has purchased from William Skinker the handsome thoroughbred stallion Harvey F. by Meltonian, out of Tchoupetoulas, by Ban Yan; second dam Clean Heels, by Duke of Montrose. He will be used to cross on the fine hunter and saddle mares of that section. Harvey F. has only two-year-olds to represent him so far, but they have won honors in the Virginia shows — classes suitable to become hunters. Harvey F. was a good winner at two, three, four and five years old, winning and being in the money forty -three times. If the Dorval Jockey Club stands by its decision to engage only Canadians as officials, Phil Mc-Ginnis probably will be the man for the position of starter. He is the inventor of the starting gate now being used by the majority of the tracks not only on the Canadian circuit, but in the United States. McGinnis has worked with such starters as A. B. Dade and Chris Fitzgerald and for many years started on both American and Canadian tracks. He was born in London, where he now makes his home. Tlie claiming of dates from May 27 to June 3 will cause tlie opening day at Dorval to confict with the closing day at Woodbine Park. Toronto, while it will cause the Montreal Driving Club to advance the Delorimier Park meeting one day. — Montreal Gazette.
