FRENCH-BRED HORSES IN SARATOGA STAKES. Among the many items of interest revealed by an inspection of the entries in the Saratoga stakes is the nomination of French -bred horses belonging to Mr. J. E. Widener which, because of the recent death of the lead of the family, are entered in the name of I.. Wood. In the Saratoga Handicap tin-entry consists of the two five-year-olds Mont dOr and Esconnba. the four-year-olds Xylon. Indiscret. Henley and Chiclet, anl the three-year-old c.dt Mliinten.int. Because of the war now devastating Euro| e, none of these has raced except Mont dOr and Ksconalia. Iioth of which were winners over Paris tracks. At the Deauville sales of yearlings August 13. 1912. a grand appearing coif by Val dOr excited keen competition and finally fell to Mr. Wideners bid of 100.000 francs 0,000. This colt waa Mont dOr. He van s.v n races as a two-yoar-old and was something of a disappointment considering that he was the top price yearling of 1912. However, he was in a year of great two-year-olds, such a blazing star as Sardanaiiale being one. to say nothing of the subsequent Epsom Derby winner Durbar II., Lo Grand. 1ressigny. Listman and others of note. He started ill seven races and was three times placed, winning the Prix de St. Leonard at Chantilly. running second to Cuerrovante in the Prix Biennial at Maisons-Laffitte, and third to Listman and Monetrie in the Prix de lHuds aa River at the same track. The other five-year-old. Esconalm. won the Prix Dolma Baghtche at Maisons-Laffitte and was placi d in two other races out of six starts, all in stake races against high-class opposition. The Widener horses appearing in the name of L. Wood in the various Saratoga stakes Bit: Mont dOr. b. h. 5, by Val dOr— Loneliness. Ksconaba. b. h. 5. by Magellan Maritime. Without any names betag divulged, it was reported a few days back that that number of horses belonging to Mr. Widener had arrived in New York from France. If it turns out that the shipment was of the horses named above, it is now obvious that an additional international fillip of high interest is added to the already great promise of Saratoga racing. These horses have been in enforced idleness for so long that trainer Lewis may have a tough job in licking them into condition for racing, but he is a pastmaster in the arts of training and can bring them to the post fit for action if anybody can.
