CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. An Ottawa man will be appointed manager for the Connaught Park Jockey Club. According ta present arrangements the German Derby is to be run at Hamburg on June 25. The death occurred recently in New Zealand of H. Maher. who at different periods of his career was prominent as a jockey and trainer. The best horse he ever trained was Mahutonga. which won an Auckland Cup. and ran second in a New Zealand Cup. In the house of commons Mr. Lough asked the foreign secretary whether he could ascertain particulars showing the amount realized in the three years before the war throughout France by the tax on betting and race courses called the pari-mutuel. Lord Robert Cecil, in reply, stated that lie would endeavor to obtain the particulars desired. — Loudon Times. Various Knglish jockeys were prominent in their calling until they were over fifty, but in Australia riders generally drop out long before they reach that age. However, at Mudgee on Saturday Unsuccessful riders included a veteran in T. Donoghue, who won the Trial Ilandiacp on his own mare Tehama. Donoghue is fifty -eight years of age. — ■ Sydney Referee of March 22. Doaa Swift, which won two City and Suburbans in England, and was placed in others, was looking so well last month that it was stated by a London sporting scribe that Mr. Joel would not have re-.jiiired much persuasion to put him in work again. Dean Swift is a gelding in his sixteenth year, and it is safe to say that even if Mr. Joel does talk about putting the old fellow in work again, he does not really mean it. The Knglish champion. Pnmmern, is stated to have wintered well, and in addition to having let down, has developed marked muscular power. P0111-merns three-year-old sister. Pomerania. did .not race last season owing to first jarring herself by jumping over some bushes on the training track, and then catching cold. She is a big filly, being lti.l. and as she has shown good speed in her work, it is anticipated she will do something good this year. Pominerns two -year -old half-sister, by Sunder, is on the small side. The following is from the pen of a contributor to Dublin Sport: "Some short time ago an erstwhile crack jockey joined the army veterinary corps, and though he naturally ixissessed an immense practical knowledge of horses, he was anxious, being ambitious, to delve into some of the great veterinary authorities masterpieces. I gladly lent him that gigantic volume. "The Horse. and meeting hiin the other night, inquired had he finished the book yetV Finished the book. said he, why. Iiimme. I only joined for the duration of the war, not for my bally life. " -
