CURRENT NOTES, OF THE TURF. Mr. Arthur James is the new steward of the English Jockey Club, ami Lird Jersey sueceds Capt. Greer as senior steward. The rule adopted last spring at Belmont Iark in reference to scratching will be continued there this year, and ten per cent of the purse will be charged for any withdrawal below six. There were more foals registered by Simon Square last year than by any other English sire, with the exception of Sunstar. whose progeny of last year numbered forty -three, while those of Simon Square totalled thir.y-five. Charles Crews string of seven head were moved in from the Halfway House to Woodbine Park Thursday. They are in charge of John Clarke, who succeeded "Banty" Kogers as trainer, the latter having enlisted. Old Pop is the reliance of the stable for the Kings Plate. C. Marsh, son of his Majestys trainer, -was present at Newmarket recently witli his right arm in n sling as the result of a bomb bursting while he was giving instruction in bomb-throwing to some of his men in Ireland. Mr. Marsh, who is a lieutenant in the Third Kings Royal Hussars, returned only recently from the front. A carload of horses has arrived at Montreal for the opening of the meeting at Deloriinier Iark, beginning M;.y 20. This car contained the horses owned by Dr. Robert Hanley of Kingston. Oat., Dick Westmoreland and U. D. Carter. In the Hanley string, which is trained by Eddie Wlielan. are Kuterpe. Ajax. Medea. Montreal and Lambs Tail. While the Canadian-bred horse Otero will lie nicked up after having wintered here. Skeets. Cffizzi anil stubborn are included in the Westmoreland lot. while Arcene. Pass On, Biinice. Blue Rock. Yellow Eyes. Cuttyhunk. Lady Yale and Idler are in the Carter strinv. The stake books for the spring meeting of the Westchester K.i.ing Association at the Belmont Park curse have i- en tanned, and the usual high-. Inaa program of sport iia ■ been arranged for the eighteen days of racing, which opens on May 25. No Inaa than seventeen stakes will be decided during this peeled. While many overnight handicaps and races for the better class of selling platers have I.e. n planned. For the opening day the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile. ,000 added, and the New York Ste. plechase. are the special features. The Suburban Handicap, one of the stellar attractions of the meeting, will be decided on Decoration Day. together with the International Steeplechase Handicap. The minimum purse value is 00.
