PROBABLE KENTUCKY DERBY STARTERS. At Least Twenty Erpected to Contest the Popular Hies — Kentucky Handicap Horses. Louisville. Ky.. Afffw 29. Last year the greatest field or starter* in number., sixteen strong, went to the Mat in the Kentucky Derby, then won by H. B. Whitneys great fillv Regret. The largest number of start* ra previously was in the inaugural year of the event. 175. wl.cn it was won by Aristides, which was one of a field of fifteen starters, ladieatkasa now seem to be that all local records will be broken on Saturday. May 13. In fact it would be no big surprise if this year fully twentv starters faced the barrier. It i time now to give a reasonably good guess av to fast what three -year-olds will make up the field la th" coming Kentucky Derby. This cil- I I itiou is made from reports from the training quartets of the entries that are going soundly in their preparation for the rich stake. They are: H. I*. Whitneys Thunderer, ch. c. by Broomstick- Jersey Lightning. H. P. Whitneys Dominant. l r. c, by Delhi— Dominoes. A. K. Macombers Star Hawk. b. c, by Sunstar Sweet Finch. A. K. John Sanfords St. Isidore, ch. g, by Isidore — Onaga. W. Viaus Skeer Face, b. c, by Hippodrome — Fleeing Venus. The only ones in this collection entitled to the twelve-pounds maiden allowance are Hesperus. The Cock and Churchill, their weight being 110 pounds. All the others will have to carry 117 pounds. The present weights for the Kentucky Derby was set by the then secretary of the New Louisville Jockey Club. Lyman 11. Davis, in 1890, when Ben Brush won the race. Since that time, Agile, the winner in 1905. is the only one of the victors in the race that was called ii| on to pick up more than that weight, he having been asked to carry five pounds extra on account of having previously won the Tennessee Derby, which was worth that year more than .MMI. From l«9l to 1895, inclusive, a colts weight in the Derby was 122 pounds. It came to this figure from a hundred pounds, which was the first weight carri"d in the race. The winners of the race when the top weight was 122 pounds were Kingman, Azra. Lookout. Chant and Halma. With such an array of probable starters, it can easily he seen what can he expected as a contest this year. The stage is thus early virtually set at Churchill Downs for the big race. Daily manager M. J. Winn, president Charles F. Orainger and secretary II. C. Applegate are at the course looking after the many details. Inith large and small, necessary for the coming racing season there. On Saturday, June 3. will be decided the fourth renewal of the Kentucky Handicap at a mile and a cinarter, for three-year-olds and over at the Douglas Bark track. While it is as yet a bit early to even guess at the probable starters, it is well known that among the horses that are being prepared by their trainers to run in the race this year are Regret. Watorblos-som. Black Toney, Solly, Hannvia, Hank ODay, Boots. Royal IL. Brynlimah. Manager Waite, Irince Hermis. Ba berry Candle, Roamer. For Fair. Marion Ooosby, Buskin. Kd Crump. Raincoat. Hodge. Borrow. Celesta. Waterwitch and such three-year-olds as Dominant. Thunderer. Bromo, Irince Harry, Dick Williams. Ellison. Bulse. Ix-na Misha, Old Koenig, Oillies. Cosmic and Dr. Moore. Borrow was seven years old when he won the •■vent last year, while in 1914 Luke Mc Luke, a three-year-old. captured the rich stake, and Ru-dolfo. "a four-year-old. won it the first year it was raced for in 1913. The Kentucky Handicap is a big illustration of the rapid strides upward of racing in Kentucky in recent years. Now the event is an annual feature at Douglas Bark and it was happy foresight in manager John Hachmeister selecting such ■ stake as the big feature race of the spring meetings of the youngest of Kentuckys race tracks. With the exception of the two great Derbys in Kentucky, each of which at present has the same amount in added money, the Kentucky Handicap stands alone today as a drawing card.
