Crowding Mars the Race — Livingston Stable Wins a Double with Othello and Fleuro— More Arrivals from the East. Lexington. Ky., May 9. — The running of the Derby Trial here today brought about the overthrow of Bulse, regarded as a dangerous candidate for Kentucky Derby honors. Bulse was beaten off by J. S. Wards Franklin and that colts performance was additionally creditable from the fact that he ran mile and an eighth in 1:51 %, equalling Governor Grays track record for the distance, made in the same race when he triumphed over Meridian. The race also resulted in the break down of J. H. Stamper. .Tr.s good colt Prince Harry, from which jockey Lilley dismounted shortly before reaching the stretch turn. Crowding on the first turn nearly caused a bad fall. Polroma being the chief sufferer. Milestone also fared badly through being crowded and jammed. The only contender free from mishaps in the running was Franklin. He received a well-judged ride and drew out in the stretch to win with great ease, with Bulse in second place and Milestone recovering in time to take third money. On his showing this afternoon the contention of many that Bulse is only a sprinter was partially verified by his running, for he tired badly in the stretch, but it would be unwise to base a definite conclusion on this race in view of the rough usage Bulse received. Franklin now looms up as a serious candidate and will have considerable local support for the Derby. With Dodge, his stablemate, he will csirry Weber and Wards colors in the big race Saturday. At the next meeting of the Kentucky Stnte Racing Commission it is said there will be presented a request from the horsemen that the commission sponsor s: long race, presumably at 2 1-4 miles and to be run in the fall, at the track bidding highest for it. It is desired that the racing commission add a suitable trophy as in the case of the Kentucky Endurance Stakes. It is thought that the proposal will meet with favor from the commission. George B. Moreland who formerly owned Just Red. is in a bad way here in one of the local hospitals Arrivals from the east today included Price McKinnev. Matlie Corbett. Phillip J. Dwyer and Chief La 11 v. of the Brooklyn Fire Department. John McTaggart made application this morning by telegraph from Baltimore to the Racing Commission for a riding license. Secretary J. B. Campbell met with a liberal response from horsemen here with nominations for the stakes at Fort Erie which closed today. Ed Baxter arrived during the day in the interest of the stakes to lie decided at Windsor and which will close May 11. Another banner crowd was on hand this afternoon and the volume of speculation was again in excess of the pari-mntuel facilities at the plant, resulting iu much money being shut out. The Jefferson Livingston stable accounted for a double by the victories of Othello and Fleuro. In the paddock at noon today John S. Wallace sold seven thoroughbreds for the Fleetwood Stud. They were in wretched condition and prices were correspondingly poor. The result was: Ethel McCaffrey, ch. m. 13, by Gooodrich — Missive; George Kussell 5 Fire Light, br. f, 4, by Samson— Fax; E.
