BRISK RACING AT PIMLICO SUN KING VANQUISHES WELDSHIP AND PROVES HIMSELF A STAB STEEPLECHASEE. Anita Wins from Damrosch in a Close Finish and Blue Fox Noses Ophelia W. Out in Another — Big Crowd Attends. Baltimore. Md.. May 9— The Crickmore Steeple- cluise and the Hill Top Purse were carded as the feature races at limlico this afternoon and both resulted in stirring contests, with the winners of each driving hard. In the former the colors of A. D. Parr were carried to victory when Sun King was returned the winner over Weldship and Battery. In the Hill Top Purse Anita scored for H. G. Bedwell over I :imroscli by a short margin. A large band of two-year-olds went to the post in the fourth race and it resulted in the most spectacular finish of the day. in which the Mirasol Stable scored its first victory of the year, when Blue Fox won over Ophelia W. by a scant nose, with Dr. Nelson a head behind the first two. The victory of E. F. Whitneys Golden Gate was not a profitable one for the stable, as he was forced to stand an advance of 00 to retain him. C M. Freeman was responsible for the bidding, which carried him to 05. Another close finish attended the running of the sixth race, in which the first four horses were heads apart, with Eddie Henry in the van and Vermont and Brave Cunarder close up, in the order named. A cold wind swept over the course, but failed to decrease the enthusiasm of the large crowd. Secretary Earlocker reports a big increase in the entries for the steeplechase stakes to be run at Saratoga the coming summer. Some of the stakes show over one hundred per cent increase in the number of nominations compared with last year. The Saratoga Steeplechase has 55 nominations against 28 in 191.r : the North American Steeplechase 58. against 39: the BeverwycU 03 against 35, and the Shellelah 63 against 20. A. T. Dobson. who was one of the stewards at Havana last winter, left Baltimore Sunday for Tijuana, where he will succeed Judge C. H. Petting-gill. Mr. Pettingill will leave San Diego next Thursday for New York to take his place in the stand at Jamaica on May IS. Several owners racing here will ship to Tijuana sit the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting, among them Steve Judge, with the It. O. Egan horses. Judge is endeavoring to lease the running qualities of the horses he is training here for K. J .McGraw and. if successful, they too will be shipped west. Frank J. Bryan will go from here to Toronto to serve as one of the steawrds at Woodbine. A. B. Dude. Joseph Mil «— ■ ■ and Mclviu Allen will also leave for Toronto sifter the racing ends here, as they are to be employed in official capacities on the Canadian courses. The weights for the Great United Hunts Steeplechase Handicap. ,000 added, to be run at Belmont 1ark Terminal on Saturday, will lie displayed in the secretarys office at limlico tomorrow morning. Several horses are going from here for this race. J.Howard Lewis gave El Bart his final work for the race this morning when lie went a mile and a ijuarter in 2:11. He will probably start Compliment also and William Garth will send over Shannon Itiver. Jockey John McTaggart forwarded an upplicn-tion to the Kentucky State Itacing Commission this morning for a license. He will probably go to Lmisville to ride W. B. Coes filly, Jacoba, in the Kentucky Oak-. There will lie a meeting of the stewards of the Canadian Racing Associations on May 0 to pass on applications for licenses from jockeys and trainers. Joseph McLennan distributed blanks to the horsemen and riders who are going from here to Canada. i Jockey J. Butwell has b-en notified by A. J. k Goldshorough to report at Belmont 1ark to assist in breaking the Miller two -year -olds sit the barrier and in working Uoainer. The latter has already been a mile in 1:41* and it is presumed that this good horse is lieing pointed for some of the rich stakes to be run in Kentucky. The horses owned by Dr. J. S. Tyree of Washington, were; turned over to W. Shields this morning and the latter will train them in the future. Shields is accounted one of the most skillful young trainers in the business. Jockey E. Haynes has signed to ride for the August Belmont stable and will report to trainer S. C. Hildrctli at the conclusion of the limlico meeting. E.
