CHICAGO BACING SAID TO BE IN SIGHT. c Organization of Business Men to Revive the American Derby at Hawthorne. Plans for the revival of horse racing in Chicago were completed yesterday by the Illinois Jockey Club, a new organization which has just been in-eoriMirated at Springfield and is composed of leading business men of the city. The first meeting is set for July 1 to 15 at Hawthorne. It is announced that the American j Derby is to be revived as the big feature for the • opening day. as a 0,000 guarantee value stake. Other important races will be held on July 4 and on J July 15. A gentlemens race is scheduled for July ; 3. which will be society day. Frank A. Froehling. one of the most prominent dealers in wholesale meats in the West, is president « of the new club. His associate officers are Charles Boedeker proprietor of the American Coal Supply Company, secretary and vice-president, and • James B. Cox, a well-known consulting engineer, treasurer. Louis Peters, who is best known as a former owner and who was also successful as a jockey jiud trainer, I has been named racing secretary. Mr. Peters will leave todsiy for Louisville to begin a campaign for entries for the various Hawthorne ! stakes. Peters expects to secure some of the best I runners in the country for the American Derby, which was last run at Washington Park in 1904 I and won by Highball. Work is said to have already been started in restoring the Hawthorne track. The grandstand is j being repaired and the property overhauled in I general. "We expect to have the fastest track in the country before the opening of the meeting." said Mr. Peters yesterday. "Experts are engaged in developing the course and no expense will be spared to make the meeting a fitting revival of the popular sport of horse racing."
