KING GEORGES HORSES RACING WELL. The Newmarket Craven meeting of April 11. 12 and 13 was a big success in all respects and in a review of some of its features London Sportsman of April 15 said: "The Craven meeting has left none but pleasant impressions behind it. for we had ample proof that the turf does not luck vitality, and the certain knowledge that his majesty is as keen as ever in his patronage. Better still, the royal colors were seen in the van, and were prominently carried on s-veral other occasions, thus showing that Marsh has the horses forward in condition and in form. Jungle Cock was the tirst to appear, and ran sufficiently well to inspire confidence in Friar Marcus for the Crawfurd Plate. A disappointing horse until the back end of last season, when lie showed in something like his two-year-old form. Friar Marcus had evidently done well during the recess, and is now one of the best hx.kiug animals in training. Once or twice he has seemed to run slack. but there was no trace of any such thing on Tuesday, when he struggled with the pluck of a bull-dog tinder strenuous pressure to win the Crawfurd Plate by a head from the much-fancied Jameson. The hoisting of his number was the signal for one of those loyal demonstrations which are so dear to the hearts of all good sportsmen. It was a good send-off for the royal stable, and I have great hope of seeing Friar Marcus grow into a champion among sprinters during the coming season. General Probyn, his half-brother, made his tirst appearance in the Wood Ditton Stakes on Wednesday, and. although unplaced, is a big. good-looking horse that will be well served by time, and is likely to do much better later. His two-year-old half-sister. Neuve Chapelle. is a lovely dark brown fllly that is full of promise. She is difficult to fault, but is perhaps a tritie straight in front, although she has the best of shoulders and great power in her back and quarters. Marconi made a good show for the Three-Year-old Stakes, although beaten, and Sir Dightou in the Craven Stakes, and. served by a tweleve pound pull in the weights, he, after a desperately hard fight, dead-heated with Kid dKcosse. which also fought it out with greater dcrtcriiiination than might have been expected front his juvenile record. This form was hardly good enough to bring Sir Continued on second page. KING GEORGES HORSES RACING WELL. Continued from first page. Dighton into the "classic" pitcures. though then-is room for improvement in the son of Bayardo. Still, twelve pounds is a big difference, and in the Two Tohusanil Guineas they will meet on level terms. Radical and Lendrick also ran in this race, and may Im- discarded as far as the Derby and Guineas an concerned, but not so Phalaris. which will not only 1m- lietter for the race, but should make more than ordinary improvement as his strength increases. I fear he will not make a thorough stayer, but his s| eed is brilliant, an. I although lie may not win the Two Thousand, nothing wonld surprise me less than to see him turn the tables on Roi dEcosse and Sir Dighton under ! the different conditions as regards weight. Jones was fortunate in being on the backs of Friar Marcaa and Sir Dighton. as his riding opportunities will probably be curtailed, for on Monday he joins the Ant i - Aircraft Service. The King exploited several two-year-olds at the meeting. Lucklow, a j sharp-looking chestnut colt by Minoru. shaping well behind Cranford on Thursday. Alexander, by Leni-berg. also shows promise, and should improve on his initial effort behind Fleetwood in the Fitz-william Stakes. On the whole the classic three-year-old aspirants did not come well through their trials. Alierdare certainly won the Spring Three-Year-Old Stakes, but was only a half length in front of Marconi, and unplaced to them was Cannobie. which has little prospect of winning in top-class company, and Ajaccio. in the same ownership, also cut up moderately. Their stable companion. Melba. made a far more creditable show in the Column Produce Stakes, and appeared to have the licst of Canterbury Belle and Call of the Wild coming down Bushes Hill, when she hung fire for a few strides. but still ran on to the end to be beaten by a short head and a head. Like the rest of the Kingsderc horses, which have Iwcn badly handicapped by the condition of their gallops, she is probably backward in condition, but she is a lovely mare, and I shall be surprised if she does not do Itetter for the Duke of Westminster. Harleston. Iw-tter known, perhaps, as the Cypress colt, cut a sorry figure behind Salandra. which was not encouraging for Lady James Douglas, and the Sever-als Stakes disposed of Weerona. and probably also of Russet for the One Thousand Guineas, though she was. jx-rhaps. a little unlucky to be beaten by Troutsdale. Lord Derby will no doubt find a more formidable representative in Canyon, which has grown all the right way since last year, and bids fair to make up into a first-class filly, and standing IS hands I inches is by no means as undersized as she has been frequently descriled; in fact, with her splendid paarat ami strong action she is piite big enough to hold her own with the best of her age and sex. After the success of Fleetwood. Half Iloon was the medium of a characteristic Fox-hill gamble for the Ashley Plate, which she won in easy fashion, but next time they meet she will not have matters all her own way with Gold Rose. which did not begin as well, and should benefit by the experience. She is by Golden Rod, which unfortunately broke his hind leg. and had to be destroyed quite early in his stud career: indeed, he had only covered nine mares. Tom Fool, a brother to Tap Gate, made a promising debut in the Granby Plate, and popular winners were Trinity Square and Merry Mac, both of which will win again.
