WATER LADY A SURPRISER DEFEATS SIR EDGAR AND OTHER FAST SPRINTERS IN FOREST PARK HANDICAP. Rain Slows the Pimlico Going, but the Good Attendance Keeps Up— Battery Takes the Steeplechase — Horses Departing. Baltimore Md.. May 16. — Water Lady showed a capital performance in the Forest lark Handicap, which was the stellar offering at the Pimlico course this afternoon when she defeated a good band of sprinters over the three-quarters route. Sir Edgar was the one to race into second place, while his stablemate. Anita, brought up third. The winner, ridden by J. McTaggart. slipped through on the inside when straightened away on the backstretch and drew away decisively when called on in the final eighth. Sir Edgar and Robert Rradley alternately set a fast pace and the former tired when challenged. The surprise of the race was the dull l erformance shown by Rhine Maiden in going she is supposed to like. At no stage of the race was she prominent in the running. A dreary rain, which set in this morning, upset track conditions and gave horses with an aptitude for mud running the call. The rain ceased shortly before the first race and the cloudy conditions had little effect on the attendance, which was of goodly proiwrtions. The Mount Washington Steeplechase, over the two-mile course, brought out a field of eight of which three failed to finish the course. Rattery, one of the pair that Harry Rites sent to the post, was returned an easy winner over Stalybridge and Superhuman. * The Pinkerton National Dectective Agency has been engaged to police the meeting to be given at Prospect Park. Edward Shevelin and James Wright will be the Pinkerton representatives there. Shevelin. however will leave for Toronto Friday night to be on hand for the opening of the Woodbine Park meeting on Saturday. Godfrey Preece is weeding out his stable preparatory to shipping to his place on Long Island. He has already disposed of two of his two-year-olds, H. G. Redwell purchasing Rurbank and E. Utter-back the filly Sally Roots. Five car loads of horses departed for Toronto this afternoon. In the consignment were the stables of Captain W. F. Presgrave. W. L. Oliver. Edward McRride. R. F. Carman. Edward Trotter. W. A. Uurter.and the Mirasol stable in charge of J. Wwards. On Thursday the stables of W. R. Mizell. J. H. Marlman, James Arthur and J. Lumsden will leave for the same place. Four car loads of horses left for Jamaica, including the big string that J. O. Talbott raced in Maryland. Dr. J. F. Adams has decided to make a steeplechaser of Lazuli and she is being schooled by trainer Harry Rites through the field. She fences well. Reports from the Mercy Hospital are that Frank Oarrett is exceedingly low and not expected to recover, iarrett at one time made Tod Sloans agreements on the New York tracks and later acted in a like capacity for Andrew Min ter. He is a brother-in-law of William H. Karrick. G. R. Fenwick has purchased the three-year-old filly Marianao. He advanced her to ,300 after she won last week, but failed to get her and afterward purchased her from J. O. Talbott at private sale. Jockey Tommy Parrington has recovered from his accident here a few days ago. when Marianao ran into the fence with him. He will leave for Toronto Thursday night and will ride the opening day at Woodbine. W. P. Rurch ships from here direct to Relmont Park. T. J. Healey will leave for Relmont Park with the R. T. Wilson string the same day. A. G. Weston will remain at Pimlico with the Thomas Clyde horses until shortly before the opening of the Saratoga meeting, when he will ship to the Spa. There are some promising young horses in this stable. Oapt. W. F. Presgrave has sold the steeplechaser Kali-lulu to It. Wallaek of Warrentowu, Va. She will be used as a hunter.
