CAPRAS KINGS COUNTY HANDICAP. Wins in a Close Finish with The Finn While Roamer Runs Unplaced. New York. May 20. — This was the first Saturday of the New York racing season and afforded a test of what can be expected in the way of attendance in the future. The weather was delightful. The Kings County Handicap was a feature of a fair card, with Roamer among the entries as a special attraction. The crowd easily numbered six thousand, which is considered good for Jamaica. The real local test will come when the gates are opened at Belmont Park. A hornets nest was stirred up by a report that the Horsemens Association had waited upon the Jamaica association in regard to an increase in purses. Larry Carey, one of the principals in the eastern branch of the organization, was quoted today as follows: "I wish you would please contradict such reports. The horsemen are well satisfied with the condition of affairs on the New York tracks, which are different from elsewhere. We all know that they are doing the best they can. considering the circumstances under which the racing is conducted and the revenue derived. The horsemen here have never contemplated or even discussd the question of purses in a formal way. In fact, the parent body of the organization in Kentucky would have to be consulted before a move could be made. We are lucky to have racing here and it is safe to say that until such time arrives that no change in conditions is imminent. There will be no demand nor suggestion made to the various associations hereabouts for any increase in purses." There were two strong tips in the first race in Wistful and Triple Crown and Wistful galloped in the winner. McDermott waited with Mr. Butlers filly until turning for home, after Aimee T. and Triple Crown had made the pace. When straightened out Wistful was urged and, going to the front, won easily. Running Shot ran away about three-eighths while going to the post. August Belmont was at the truck today for the first time and saw Sam McMeekin beaten by Vermont and Illuminator. Vermont set a hot pace, followed by Illuminator. John Loftus was responsible for the victory of Dervish, which math- the third victory of the day for the James Butler stable. Dervish and Piquette 1 made the pace, the latter falling back beaten at the head of the stretch. Armament then challenged i and LaftM had to put up one of his great finishes to get the horse home first. Dervish was bid up lioni SSMl to ,205 and bought in. The victory of Malachite in the Texas Handicap 1 was pleasing to Mr. Belmont and his friends. Malachite permitted Grasp and Feminist to make the pace until in the final quarter, tlieu ran around the leaders, to win going away. Bac went well for about five-eighths and then quit as if short. The Kings County Handicap furnished a stirring contest and the outcome was in doubt until the last strides, where Capra headed The Finn. This pair singled out after they turned for home and came on together the last eighth, both striving for all there was in them. It was horse against horse and McDermott against McTuggart. Both horses were tired but Capra proved to be in a trifle lietter condition. B»ots finished third, beating a bunch of tired trailers. Roamer gave up all he had at three-quarters. The short turns of the track did not suit Short Grass. Prince Henry and Gainer were killed off by the pace as was Tea faddy. The time of the race was 1:45%, equalling the track record. John McTaggart rode a perfect race on Naushon. He took his mount back after going an eighth and took him to the front again in the stretch and won in a hard drive. Intelligent jockeyship was responsible for the horses victory. Jockey Shuttinger was fined 0 and suspended for the rest of the meeting for crossing the others in the first race while astride Aimee T. W. G. Yanke was an arrival today from Kentucky. Walter B. Jennings and Thomas Murphy, harness horsemen, were visitors. Superintendent Pelz of Belmont Park stated this afternoon that the steeplechase course at that track would be opened Monday for schooling. It has lieen authoritatively stated that II. P. Whitneys 1915 Kentucky derby winner. Regret, will not be a starter in the Kentucky Handicap at Douglas Park. The Kentucky stable lias secured first call on jockey Eddie Dugan and the Beverwyck Stable has obtained second call on that good rider.
