CAPITAL MONDAY RACING AT JAMAICA. Wooden Shoes Proves Victor in the Garden City Selling; Stakes — Woodtrap Is Beaten. New York. Way 22. — Clear skies, with weather cool enough for light wraps, ushered in the weeks racing at Jamaica. The well-balanced card of six races attracted a fair sized crowd of spectators, who filled the stand and lawn. The days sport was interesting throughout, with several well-backed horses successful. Gilford Cochrans Burlesque upset the calculations of the talent in the first race by beating Woodtrap and Bally, the two public choices. Burlesque followed Bally for the first half mile then McCahey sent her up and held Bally safe. Woodtrap had some excuse through meeting slight interference in the early racing, then finished gamely and took second place from the tiring Bally by a nose. Woodtrap is evidently a slow beginner. Gallop was pretty well extended to win the second race from Ida Claire. The latter made a gallant attempt to get to the winner, but Metcalf shook the whip at Gallop when an eighth out and he retained his lead to the end. Yodeling was in front for a while, but retired somewhat earlier than expected and that ended his chances. Saratoga finished fast, but did not show anything like his form of last year. Fairbrother made no mistkae with Pullux in the Arizona Handicap. After racing Cy Merrick into retirement. Pr.llux drew away in the stretch. True as Steel made his challenge late and was going fast at the close but had no chance of getting to the winner. Presumption was up in time to nose out Cy Merrick for third place. Schoolboy showed some speed and quit on the way home. The Garden City Selling Stakes produced a thrilling race with the leaders changing positions several times. First Sir William Johnson showed in front, only to be overtaken by Bac. closely followed by a flock of contenders. Blue Thistle and Wooden Shoes took up the running on the home turn and in the drive to the finish Wooden Shoes proved superior. Blue Thistle tired at the finish, it being his first effort of the season. Bac retired at seven-eighths and Sir William Johnson held on long enough to get third money from the fast coming Grumpy. The winner was run up by Emil Herz from ,100 to ,900, but the Quincy Stable retained him with an extra bid of . There was a sensational finish in the fifth race, which was won by Itiverdale in the last few strides from Lewnie. which had set a hot pace from the beginning. Nonesuch was first to get to going and opened a gap in the early running, but dropped back on the last turn. At this stage Itiverdale was at least four lengths behind Leonie and gaining with every stride just got to the finish in time to win. Bally pulled up slightly lame after the first race. The Wickliffe Stable horses in charge of trainer W. C. Clancy, arrived from Leads-Ufa today and are stabled at Belmont Park. Jockey Mack Garner accompanied the stable. William Garth was a visitor today, having come from Toronto. He will return to Canada within a week. Col. S. L. James who was confined to a Baltimore hospital by an attack of appendicitis, was an arrival today. The trainers of steeplechasers took advantage of the course at Belmont Park being open this morning and sent their charges through the field. The horses of F. Ambrose Clark, Harry La Montague and Thomas Hitchcock were among those that worked. Work-outs over a fast track were: Alma B. — Half mile in 52. Benevolent — Three -quartern in 1:20. Cannon Bridge — Five-eighths in 1:03. Cliarmeuse — Three-eighths in 41%. Maifou— Mile in 1:4S%. Narmar — Three -eighths in 37%. Nephthys — Mile in 1:45. Patrick S. — Three -quarters in 1:18%.
