MANDARIN FIRST IN THE BREEDERS STAKES Fortune Smiling on Mr. Seagram This Year — Early Light Wins the Air-tree Steeplechase. Toronto, Ont., May 23. — The Seagram stable scored another notable victory at the Woodbine track this afternoon when the Kings Plate winner. Mandarin, added the Breeders Stakes to his credit. This was the feature race of the afternoon and it had ,000 in added money. The conditions called for a race of a mile and an eighth and Mandarin, shouldering top weight, raced under restraint until in the last quarter, where he drew away and at the finish was fighting for his head. This is the third stake race that the Seagram stable has won at this meeting. There was a d-cided improvement in conditions this afternoon the weather being all that could be desired. The footing, however, remained heavy, although the track dried out as the afternoon progressed. Well-bucked horses scored in a majority of the races and speculation was heavy. The Aintree Steeplechase went to H. G. Bed-wells Early Light, which beat his opponent in easy fashion. The Bedwell colors were also carried to victory by Balfron in the Waterloo Plate. Jockey Eddie Taplin will lie here tomorrow to ride Achievement in the Toronto Cup. The stewards also lifted J. Connors suspension so that lie can ride Punes in the same race. Freshet was jumped on and cut down in the second race. Henry McPaniel will continue as trainer for the Thorncliffe Stable. Gould for T. J. Bird only. H. Gray for J. A. Hendricks only, C. Jones. E. W. Leaver. W. McKenzie. J. P. Smyth, H. Tansey, W. Warrington and W. Morrissey. Pefore shipping the mares. Marjorie A. and Briar Path, to Canada, H. G. Bedwell mated them with Prince Ahmed. Trainer George Walker will remain here with the Brookdale Stall:- horses for a week following the close of the Woodbine meeting. He will not race his horses at either of the Montreal meetings, hut will go from here direct to Ottawa. Capt. W. F. Presgrave has taken over the Canadian-bred Sea I ord. which was wintered in Toronto to T. J. Bird. Sea Lord is said to Is- a good fencer. He will be raced through the feld this year. Jockey J. Connors was suspended for three days by the starter. The stewards have lifted the suspension on jockey Guy Burns so as to permit him to ride Fair Montague in the Torouto Cup tomorrow.
